The purpose of this Parados was to give explanation as to why Polyneices is not being given a proper burial and why Eteocles is. Within the Parados it is said that Polyneices was leading an army against Thebes, while Eteocles was fighting for Thebes against his brother. In the midst of the battle, both Zeus and Ares come to aid Thebes and essentially help them win the battle. However, at some point, both Polyneices and Eteocles kill each other using their spears. At the conclusion of the Parados, the chorus tells the audience that Thebes wins the battle and that the people should celebrate. As mentioned in the video, the repetition of the phrase "our land" and "our homes" shows the tone that Thebes is very protective of their land. In
