Analysis Of Polygamy Now By Elizabeth Joseph

Decent Essays
It is controversial that the author of "Polygamy Now," Elizabeth Joseph, would say that there is only one lifestyle that would be fit for independent women, polygamy, having one or more husband/wife. The information she provides us in her reading can not necessarily be backed up. She is only stating how polygamy fits in with her own lifestyle. Not everyone has the same job, similar work schedules, and/or have children to take care of. It is selfish of the author to state how polygamy only fits into her lifestyle. Furthermore, Joseph is an attorney, which means she is aware of the law and has to know that practicing polygamy is in fact illegal in the U.S., it is considered as a crime. Although, Elizabeth Joseph states in her reading that polygamy is the ultimate lifestyle, a considerable amount of people would disagree because of the type of information she chose to put into her reading. …show more content…
From the reading, "Because, despite its reputation polygamy is the one lifestyle that offers an independent woman a real chance to "have it all." (Joseph), this quote proves that Joseph does not believe in other possible lifestyles and only wants to practice polygamy. Furthermore, she only applies it to her life, how it fits her lifestyle. There are many problems when it comes to this reading. Such as, problems that could occur between the wives, are the children comfortable with this lifestyle, how does one explain polygamy to children, and the fact that she is an attorney, which means she and the others could possibly get arrested for practicing polygamy. The author in this reading seems to have the same characteristics that Nicole Hardy, writer of "Single, Female, Mormon, Alone." They are both extremely independent and the breadwinners. This proves that they have different lifestyles. Hardy is by herself while Joseph is

The myth that adultery and having sexual intercourse out of wedlock didn’t exist in history was false because as Coontz explains, many political figures had mistresses and it wasn’t unheard of. In addition, we see that marriages were more stable leading up to, and throughout, the 19th century because the man and woman were seen as one; this is because women were property and men controlled their every move so it was hard to have independence. Today we know that marriages can be more problematic because there is more autonomy and fluidity.…

    2. Eve is a very important figure for Judaism because she is the first women that was created. The Jewish understanding of her is slightly different than the Christian understanding, in that Jews do not see Eve as the source of original sin like Christians do. The negative and most common way of viewing Eve is that she is the cause of the fall of humanity and the expulsion of her and Adam from the perfect Garden of Eden is blamed on her. Many people see her as weak because she fell for the lies of the serpent.…

One of the larger items being discussed is the court’s right to be in religious practices. Although explicitly defined in the first amendment is the Freedom of Religion, polygamist did not gain this right within their religion. The Supreme Court case also discussed the right to control the influence over the church’s members, or potential members. The church’s land would have given them the ability to reach a larger community. The courts also felt they had this right to intervene in the Mormon practice of polygamy and did not feel they infringed on First Amendment rights.…

In the past century, and particularly in recent decades, the definition of the family has widened to be inclusive of a spectrum of family structures, not just nuclear or traditional families. Less people are getting married and the divorce rate has increased, as have single parent homes and cohabitation, while birth rates have decreased. Ideas about gender roles in families have also been challenged with the women’s rights movement and the legalization of same sex marriage. There has also been an increase in interracial and interreligious marriages.…

There is a separation between church and state in order to allow people to not only practice, but celebrate their own religion freely. The US government is based off the values of the men that wrote it though. The Puritan and Eurocentric views reflect heavily on the constitution and the amendments.
