In Visible Man, Singer introduces a “panopticon.” In the past, philosopher Jeremy Bentham created the idea of a building that could essentially spy on different members of society. However, Singer claims that although the building never actually existed, society itself has created their own “panopticon”. Singer states “what’s more, we have helped construct this new Panopticon, voluntarily giving up troves of personal information” (Singer 31). Our primary technological uses have made us vulnerable to those who collect and store our information easily. In our daily lives, we relinquish some of our private information ignorantly. As human beings, many of us tend to simply hand out our information in exchange for other items or free services. Many times, online shopping offers better prices but at what cost? Sometimes, better prices means relinquishing your private information that could be obtained by anyone at anytime. While many deem technology as oppressive and intrusive, it has completely reshaped our society in many positive ways. Singer presents the question on whether our technology will liberate us from our oppressive government. Although technology does possess negative advantages, it contains positive ones as well.
