Rodney the Porcupine Lazy, large, and lumpy describe the personality and body traits that lie in Rodney, the picnic-crashing porcupine. The spikes lining his back could pierce through anything that they came across. Therefore, he retained the ability to break into sandwich bags or other food storage containers with ease. His chubby body could do as much damage as a bullet, but that only created half the scare.…
Hurtful love We all know that we are not the only inhabitants of the planet Earth. That is why keeping animals as pets became common in some parts of the world since centuries, and a lot of people are willing to spend money on them. In “The last Meow” by Burkhard Bilger. Bilger argues how much people spend on their pets every year and that people started putting their money in the hands of pets.…
In his work A New Species of Trouble: The Human Experience of Modern Disasters, author Kai Erikson describes how a sense of community can arise out of a shared trauma "There is a spiritual kinship there, a sense of identity” (Erikson 231). There are however a “corrosive” effect on the life of everyone in the community and secondhand knowledge of an event will allow the survivor to escape the negative consequences. The victim is left only with a sense of belonging to a triumphant community. This line of thought is more in line with Roman tradition than with the outline provided in Genesis.…

With injustice and cruelty running rampant in the world, it is unsurprising that people become determined to make things better for tomorrow. Those aware of the moral greyness of their actions often quote the cliché saying that the ends justify the means. Commendable yet unreasonable, leaders whose sole purpose in life is to fix what they see as “wrong” with the world fall prey to thinking there is only ally or enemy. In the long run, they cause more conflict since they no longer force themselves to hold their principles to same standards as they hold others. This is the downfall of leaders in many works of literature, including Harrison Bergeron and The Lord of the Flies.…
Primary source readings 6.3 and 6.4 represent two very opposite perspectives on the American colony and its fight for Independence. In one the British fear and concern of the uprising is expressed and in the other is a unity song that the colonists used as motivation and hope. However in both readings a common theme of the colonists is expressed; the unity amongst the colonists. In the reading 6.3 by Thomas Hutchinson, he expresses the fear he experiences through watching the uprising of the American colonies.…

David Wallace’s article of “Consider the Lobster” is a very unique article and went above and beyond to grab the reader’s attention on a sensitive subject; the senses and feels of an animal that later becomes our food. The idea of putting yourself in the bodies of an animal that us humans later consume, is both a disturbing and difficult task. Wallace, an American novelist and professor, was assigned to cover the “Maine Lobster Festival” held in late July in the state’s mid-coast region, or western side of Penobscot Bay. The Maine lobster festival of for short “MLF” draws huge crowds from all over, around 80,000 people attend every year. Wallace who was an “assigned correspondent” at the MLF, wrote about his experience and what he saw.…
Beast, abusive and enraged these are words that can be used to describe Logan Killicks, Janie's first spouse, who at first is a symbol for protection and financial support but soon becomes a scorn in Janie’s life who treats her like a mule. I often find myself prey to emotions and impulses I cannot control. When I feel overwhelmed, I feel like the walls are closing in and I need to claw my way out of my skin. Sometimes I will be sitting with my family and all I can think about is what a disappointment I am. For many years I have thought this meant that I am troubled in a way that one else is, and that is the most daunting experience: believing that you go through your entire life alone and misunderstood.…

In the novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime, Mark Haddon introduces Christopher Boone. A 15 year old boy who discovers his neighbors, Mrs. Shear’s dead dog in his backyard. In this paper I will explore the reasons why this is actually a murder-mystery novel, why Christopher would be considered autistic, analyze some of the major characters in the novel and how they relate to the themes of the novel, and explain my take of the ending. Christopher at the start of the novel explains that this is a murder mystery novel, one which he is writing. Even though most would argue that it is not.…
