All people on earth are unique and special, in their own way. No one should ever have to transform themselves to feel accepted. It is okay to want to be rich and want the better things in life, but to achieve all those great things one must put in the work, just as the others before them. Some people often go to extremes to gurantee wealth and the status that comes along with it. In the process, they devalue any norms, values, or morals they were taught as an child. For example, in“ Paul’s Case,“ written by Willa Cather, Paul will do anything to live like a rich man. The author shows us his difference in attitudes saying;“he carried messages and brought programs as though it were his greatest pleasure in life, and all the people in his section thought him a charming boy, feeling that he remembered and admired them“(Cather 11).This feeling for Paul is displayed, because he actually cared about the theatre. However, in school he was considered ummannerly to the teachers. He admired the theatre life and had become so engulfed into it that he began to also want to be a part of it. In fact, Paul decides to take on the made up role of being the close friend of the actors.“He had autographed pictures of all the members of the stock company,which he showed his classmates,telling them the most incredible stories of his familiarity with these people, of his acquaintance with the soloist who came to Carnegie Hill, his suppers with them and flowers he sent them“ ( Cather 34). Paul lies eventually catch up with him, instilling anger within his teachers in the process. In class he would lie and say that basically he had better things to do with the stock company, then to listen to what the teachers have to say. His actions and demenar towards the teachers, is what made the principal to go to his father and remove him from school. When word got back to the stock company of the stories Paul had made up, the actors were very amused . The sequence of events had to be specifically catastrophic for Paul.The only people he had seemed to like from the theatre, now agreed with the faculty and his father and said,“Paul is a bad case“( Cather
