Most students will read the surface of a passage, without following up with questions or a discussion. After reading Mike Bunn’s “How to Read Like a Writer,” I revisited my directed self-placement essay while asking myself the many questions Bunn recommends to ask oneself when “reading like a writer.” In doing so, I was able to recognize the strengths and weaknesses I possess as a writer, and therefore know where I need to grow the most as a writer. Getting the attention of kindergarteners can be hard sometimes, one way to grab their short attention is by telling them a secret. If you were to ask me about my high school writing experience, I would tell you that I did not have much experience. We did not have any classes at my school that were specifically writing classes. At my high school, we just had regular English classes where we would occasionally do a few papers in. My English teacher senior year was a great person, but did not necessarily teach us a lot about proper styles of writing papers.
