Theme Essay. Education between Ship Breaker and Folks this ain't normal
In his book Folks, This Ain’t Normal: A Farmer’s Advice for Happier Hens, Healthier People, and Better World, Joel Salatin approached learning from a Christian point of view. Salatin is a teacher and a farmer who runs a successful farm, Polyface Farm, in Virginia, United States. His farm is known worldwide due to his astonishing ideas/methods of farming, which are exclusively organic. On the other hand, Paolo Bacigalupi, in his book – Ship Breaker, reflects his education ideas through novel, which is set in an setting of the future falling and broken world, where the human civilization is viewed as a disaster. According to Paolo, the most important way of improving the education system is through understanding the relationship between nature and modern civilization. However, according to Joel opinions in his book, changing this begins right from our gardens and what we eat. For instance, Joel’s ideas is based on community. From his point of view, life in today's world (in this 21st century) is no longer normal, and it needs immediate improvement. In his book, Folks This Ain’t Normal, he stresses multiple times how far the human society has shifted from the simple joy to crazy world we live in today, which proves that living ‘close to the land’ and near the people we love, can help are world not go crazy from a Neurologist. While the Ship Breaker presents its educational ideas from the activities of a young boy who was part of a crew at the seas, Folks This Ain’t Normal presents the same educational views from the farming perspective. Both of the books agree that human civilization has become a disaster to the ecological progresses. In Joel’s view, everything is no longer normal in the modern human society and things need to be changed through behavioral change and by embracing organic farming.
