Addiction. A word that carries so much hate and pain that anyone you talk to will know about it even if they haven’t experienced it themselves. But what is addiction? Many argue that it’s dependency on a substance. Others believe that it can be dependency on activities. Overtime however it has been determined that addiction can be activities and substances so then how does TV fit into this. Can you be addicted to TV and if you can is it a serious addiction? Marie Winn begins her piece with the same question. She spends a couple of paragraphs to define a serious addiction. “The essence of any serious addiction is a pursuit of pleasure,,,”. Winn drives home what a serious addiction is, not only in general but some examples of common addictions. Some examples she uses are alcohol and heroin to create a more focused image for the reader comparing substances like heroin with television. She then spends the rest of the piece comparing the effects of television and watching a lot of it to the effects of serious addiction like heroin using statements from a college english instructor “I find television almost irresistible. When the set is on, I can’t ignore it”. This is a very similar idea to what many addicts that enter rehab say. Yes. TV addiction is as real and in some cases as serious as heroin or alcohol. It can create a dependency for it to where someone can’t function normally and has no desire to experience entertainment outside of television. So TV addiction exists then how can you fight it? Limit your family's television time. Spend more time outside or playing board games or just talking. Don’t use more time to watch TV as a reward. Eventually it will become just another way to entertain yourself rather than something everyone needs to survive in their
