1984 is a totalitarian society. Big Brother, the supposed leader of the community, controls and causes fear and has absolute control within the society. Big Brother causes fear not just to the citizens, but to the party or government as well. He needs a bunch of people to help him out cause fear in order for a totalitarian society to function properly. Another example of how Big brother is a totalitarian society through fear is by propaganda. The party really enforces the their motto which is really what Big Brother wants. The party makes people recognize the following motto, “War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength" (Orwell 4). In other words, the party’s motto is basically brainwashing the people completely. Big Brother’s way of society is basically the opposite of ours. The spread of these ideas and the government following them, makes the community or all of the people of the society want to follow them and be scared if they think differently. Ford, the leader of the community, controls and causes fear and has absolute control within the society. Ford is similar to Big Brother for 1984. Also, unlike Big Brother in 1984, Ford is a real character in the book. A good description of Ford’s position in society would include,"Ford, we are twelve; oh make us one, Like drops within the Social River; Oh, make us now together run As swiftly as thy shining Flivver. Come, Greater Being, Social Friend, Annihilating Twelve-in-One! We long to die, for when we end, Our larger life has but begun." (Huxley 81). The community’s point is that Ford is the creator of the society and is represented as the peoples idol or god. Ford controls the society under fear of emotions and is sort of planning everything from above. He is not really mentioned a lot in the book but he is very important because he started the community. People obey him and follow their beliefs because everyone are scared by their rulers. Rulers and leaders always cause fear. Especially, if they are much above you and have the power to do what they want to you. Furthermore, Ford controls society by the use of soma. Huxley states,” "Ford, I should like to kill him!" But all he did was to say, "No, thank you," and fend off the proffered tube of tablets." (Huxley 54). The author emphasizes the use of soma and how common it is by the quote. Everyone takes it on a daily basis. The purpose of the drug itself, is to make
