This claim raised many disputes, but found its confirmation in the “Original of Rebecca in Ivanhoe” article by Gratz Van Rensselaer published in The Century Magazine, v.24, 1882. In this article Sir Walter Scott did not hide his delight of success of the created prototype for the figure of Rebecca in Ivanhoe. Another important fact in this article was the information about the sending of the first copy of the book upon its completion to Irving with addressing him several questions on getting answers of ways of depiction of Rebecca. The Proportions of Rebecca's arms are rather bulky in accordance with her body and stand out in the painting. This detail infers that she not only holds a lot of power and stability, it also shows her capability of doing more than just housework and other jobs that are assumed to most women. The way Tito put Rebecca up against the crowd of men is similar to how the Jews resisted full immersion into the Italian culture presented in the Renaissance at the time they had migrated there. Although they were in the minority, the Jews of this time period tried to make themselves known and culturally independent from the values of the Renaissance. This was clearly seen through the published pieces of literature from known scholars in the time period.…

Washington Irving probably had a psychotic wife that dumped him and that’s why he is a misogynist. Misogyny is not always a big deal some people take things way to literal and need to keep their horrid mouths shut. Washington Irving may have had many perilous encounters with some risque women. Some things that he says are misogynistic they are just true to the point where people get mad. Part of the reason he is accused of this is because women were viewed differently back in the day.…

Yet when a gentle, caring, and selfless mother is illustrated as the source of terrible devastation, it makes readers question their own prejudice. In Frankenstein, Mary Shelley uses the characterization of Caroline Frankenstein in order to establish the essential root of Victor’s ambitious actions, highlighting that the most selfless prove to be the figures that inflict the most damage. Washington Irving creates this social conflict between the characters Ichabod Crane and Katrina Van Tassel in, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” Ichabod Crane, a strict school teacher and singing instructor, represents the lower-class in this short story and Katrina, daughter of a wealthy farm owner, represents the upper-class. On the surface, the text tells a story of a poor school teacher who falls madly in “love” with an upper-class beauty queen who ultimately rejects Ichabod — or so we assume. However, Irving goes much deeper than a surface level conflict between two socially unequal characters. Andrea Tinnemeyer, Department Chair, English Department at The College Preparatory School, states, “by casting Katrina as the love interest and point of contention and competition between the two characters of Crane and Bones, Irving recasts the Revolutionary War in terms of a love triangle.…

In early 17th century literature, there are several poems and texts that praise the beauty of carnal passion and the cleverness of seduction, but there is also a whole genre of text that glorifies the platonic love of a friend. Friendship is a powerful and essential aspect to understanding the connection writers have to their community and the way that society affects their work. In particular, Katherine Philips devotes herself to her friends through her writing and often creates Neoplatonic pieces specifically for female writers in the Society of Friendship. Philips is adamant that sexual love is not the absolute expression of love, but that true friendship is the testament of affection. Although some of her verses can be interpreted as homoerotic…
