Love Bade Me Welcome Analysis

Many people think that life must be dancing in field of sunflowers happy for it to be worthwhile. That, however, is not the case. Dr. Kilpatrick explained that actually we only truly live when we accept that life is not always dancing in a field of sunflowers but can involve real adventure. Real adventure consists of real peril, real prohibition, have real decisions, and must bear the consequences of these decisions. Although these four things may not seem like the characteristics of a truly fulfilling life, Humanities 101 has proven that joy, truly living, and love can come from pain, sacrifice, and failure. A number of readings, films, and testimonies we studied in this course prove that there can be a life truly lived when it seems the world around is crumbling apart. Two books that spoke about the possibility of truly living throughout an adventure happening would be The Last Battle and One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich. They become entombed in the illness focusing their every thought around death and sickness or they use their illness as an awakening of life. In the short story “Love Bade Me Welcome,” the author, Christian Wiman, is faced with life-altering news. He has a deadly, incurable disease. Through his diagnosis, his wife and him find renewed spirit of God through church and he realizes that without his suffering he would most likely not have found his life. “I would qualify Weil’s statement somewhat, then, by saying that reality, be it of this world or another, is not something one finds and then retains for good. It must be newly discovered daily, and newly lost.” (Love Bade Me Welcome. Page 244) Wiman does not find true life one day and expect that to overcome all of his problems forever, he is constantly searching for God and love every
