On Campus Living and Residential Life
For each critique, each of the moderators had a different way they carried themselves. There questionnaire varied as well as their follow ups to the responses of the participants. To start for the first moderator Sarah, I felt that going first was unbelievably challenging. The fact of having to conduct this focus group with no prior experience, as well as not being able to base hers off of a previous moderator is very difficult. Just by going first it showed she had a lot of key characteristics you need to have to be an effective moderator by stepping up and being courageous to conduct this first out of everybody.
For Sarah’s focus group I feel that her opening question was extremely effective, having each participant elaborate on their craziest story in the dorms was very strong as it kept the mood light and allowed for significant interaction based on each person’s story. This not only helped Sarah, but the participants as they are new to this as well. To start off on the critique the moderator didn’t always directly look straight ahead of the focus group, her body was focused more towards one side then the other. This definitely could be because we watched two previous ones and knew what to expect. I feel that we really engaged because the topic was a great one to talk about amongst fellow college students. The way Andie asked her questions really allowed the group to be just as effective as the moderator. The general follow up questions weren’t really needed as much just because the initial questions were so strong. Giving credit to the other focus group I feel they had generally a little more serious of topics, but this one was enjoyable to be a part of. It made each participant really want to get in the conversation and that’s all you really can ask out of your

The tears began to stream down his face, I immediately reply I sense you are hurting and not able to continue but when you ready we can come back to you (Reflecting Feelings). Another member speaks out Mrs. Wellonton, she speaks of a husband of 64 years of marriage, her question was she has fears of getting through each day without him, what will I do now? With a soft spoken voice reassuring her with the support of everyone, and positive goals will help each other (Supporting). The room becomes still and quiet, but the faces are loud with conversation, I ask the group would they participate in an activity, I have a pad and pen, I would like everyone to write down on the left side of the paper all the good things they remember about their spouse, and on the right side things that used to bother them about the spouse, in the next six weeks everyone will read out loud to the group what they wrote. So don’t rush through this, give it a lot of thought and daily jot down on the list (Goal Setting).…

The students were asking questions about safety and what they should be aware of. I appreciated having the background knowledge to be able to have a conversation like this with my students. I want to take the knowledge I gained and share it with parents, students, and/or staff as appropriate. The important thing to take away from workshops is information to share with others. As a leader, I will continue to be a lifelong learner and take the information I learn and pass that on to my staff.…

I recently attended a group observation at Project Point of Light in Shippenville, Pennsylvania. The overall experience was a positive one. It was very interesting to talk to the members and hear their sides of the story. They truly are just human beings and I believe that meeting with them and having an opportunity to talk to them has somewhat changed my view of sex offenders overall. Though I am still confused by their behaviors, which is somewhat difficult to overcome, but I am more understanding of who they are because they are only human and they know they have made a mistake.…

In my education, I want neither too rigid of a core curriculum nor to loose of one. Yale has the perfect middle where there is a third part of the curriculum that is my choice, allowing me to study my other interests outside the range of my major. Also, after visiting Yale, I found the welcoming environment for which I was looking, especially with residential colleges. Having my residential college chosen for me is appealing as well as the great things in each of the colleges like the Buttery and movie theaters that I heard…

As I came to college, my family and I anticipated I would be following a simple mold of a conscientious student. One that is highly focused in some limited number of long term goals. Don 't get me wrong, this only meant that I had high expectations out of my college education. For some people, this path leads them to great success. But, I slowly realized my vision of success needed to have stories from different roads and bridges, than just one simple path.…

College: What it Was, Is, and Should Be by Andrew Delbanco (2012) provides a comprehensive chronological overview of higher education from its origins to the present day. Upon reading the title I assumed the subsequent pages would drag on about the failures of higher education and list a fool proof way of correcting said issues, I am happy to announce I was incorrect. In the book’s six short chapters Delbanco manages to take us back in time and review the origins of higher education in order to better understand where we are today. In the first three chapters Delbanco reviews the evolution of college, which originally stirred from religion, and became the way society groomed young men of age. In 1886 founding president of John’s Hopkins stated that college should always be a place for the development of a student’s character (p.42).…

I am interested in the Early College Academy because it is a great opportunity. I understand that I will have to do a lot more work here than in other schools because of the college courses, but that does not matter to me. I will still study and work hard for the duration of my time here. This is the only school in which I can knock off two years of college for free. I also like the schedule here and how it's shorter, but I understand that I will have to use the rest of the time for studying and that's alright for me because in order achieve one's goals one has to work hard and that's what I…

Having the residential curriculum on college campuses is successful for many reasons. The residential curriculum is an intentional process that aligns mission, vision, and outcomes of the residence halls to IU. According to Graduate Supervisor at IU, Tony Robinson, there have been trends across the board, showing that student affairs are now moving to using the residential curriculum model. The nature of learning within higher education, have not changed, but our understanding of the learning process has changed significantly (Keeling, 20014). The residential curriculum is like a new map that can encourage students to take responsibility for their education as a process of integration and application, not as a checklist of courses and educational…
