The picture from the “ECL Eighth Edition Illustration Samples,” I choose to discuss number ten. This illustration is titled “Officer Buckle and Gloria.” This illustration is by Peggy Rathmann in 1995. From the choices that were shown, each image has its own different style, visual elements, and elements of fiction complemented by illustrations. This paper will discuss those elements along with the meaning of the actual image itself that Peggy Rathmann was trying to explain.

This image includes line, composition, and endpapers. Lines in the image create texture. It gives the image more of a realistic view. The lines from the dog show that the dog jumped into the air. Lines on the uniforms and the children as well help with being realistic. The composition is explained as, “arranging an illustration around a single focal point, which is the key to understanding the composition.” The focal point of this image is the dog. To understand the picture, you need to be able to see the dog is the reason the children are paying attention and are getting excited. The elements in this image are plot, character, theme, and mood. The plot alone should give a good example on what the text is trying to say. In this case, there is no text, therefore the illustration should explain what is happening. The character is meant to show “physical appearance and actions.” The illustration shows both physical appearances of the dog, students, and police officer, and the action is the children pointing, the dog jumping, the police officer trying to talk to the students. The theme is a central topic the text talks about. Though again there is no text, the theme is what explains the picture. I believe the theme is happiness and laughter. Just viewing this picture, you get a sense of joy and excitement. This can also connect with mood. As mentioned in the book, the dog is overjoyed and goes outside the pink
