The Obama Effect

The ‘Obama effect’, a decrease of implicit anti-black evaluative bias after exposure to Barak Obama, first became apparent during the 2008 presidential primaries. Initially it was not clear that this reduction was in reaction to Obama specifically however, follow-up research later confirmed this. In 2011, a study was conducted which provided evidence of this effect at the beginning of his presidency. As the study was conducted some years later, researchers were faced with the challenge to revert participants back to their metal state before the Obama effect occurred. This was done by increasing implicit anti-black evaluative bias with the use of negative exemplars and then successfully decreasing it by exposing them to Obama, a positive exemplar. …show more content…
Novel to this study, the researchers also studied implicit racial stereotyping following the logic that Obama’s counter-stereotyipicality as an exemplar will cause a reduction in this variable. Also measured were participants’ explicit stereotypic perception and feelings about Obama. As proven necessary in previous research studying this effect, researchers first increased implicit attitudes undoing the Obama effect and also eliminating potential effects of other exposures. A sample of 105 undergraduate students completed a lexical decision task where they were primed with three negative exemplars which had been previously confirmed through pilot testing as negative and stereotypic. Next, participants completed a second lexical decision task which primed them with Obama, a positive exemplar. The effects on the dependent variables were measured using two implicit association tasks. Finally, participants completed self-report measures assessing four potential moderators: approval of Obama’s performance, participant political affiliation, perceptions of Obama’s stereotyipicality, and participant’s perceptions of Obama. The study found similarly lower levels of both dependent measures in the Obama condition. Further, an association between race and AIT where black …show more content…
This applies to everyday life because it supports the argument that there is a need for more positive representation in the media. By this I mean that presenting people to more positive exemplars with help to decrease bias and negative attitudes. It also, leads me to believe that the high levels of evaluative bias and stereotypes are due to the constant (and some would argue strategic) exposure of negative exemplars of minority groups. The study two result of no difference in whether or not the exemplar is stereotypic or not adds an interesting argument to the discussion of changing how minorities are seen in the media. There has been a recent call for action that there be less roles/portrayal of minorities in stereotypical ways however, these results show that even the stereotypic characters are helping to relieve bias and negative racial

Although it is not always ideal, today’s world forms stereotypes for specific cultures and uses them as entertainment. Stereotypes exist for Caucasians, African Americans, Hispanics, people from the south, people from the north, and various others. Through deeper analysis, it is discovered that not all of these stereotypes are true and usually only reflect a small percentage of the individuals of these cultures. The world is so vast that it is hard for the average person to form connections with people from these walks of life, so the stereotypes stick. This angers the people of these cultures, because it seems that the world is making fun of their way of life, which is all they know.…

After taking the Implicit Association Test, I confirmed that I had no automatic preference between African Americans and European Americans. After learning about attitudes, I thought my conclusions would bring to light some of the explicit attitudes I am consciously aware of; but thankfully the test concluded no huge difference between the two ethnic backgrounds being compared. I honestly grew up in a socially diverse and acceptable environment. I was brought up to learn to love and understand people outside of my ethnic group and appreciate them for the good and bad.…

The results for the Implicit Association Test (IAT) Race Test was not as surprising to me as the results for the IAT Gender Test. According to the IAT Gender Test, I had a slight association of males with the word “career” and females with the word “family” compared to males with the word “family” and females with the word “career.” I had thought I would score higher on the association of females with family and males with a career. Although there was this difference, these results show that my unconscious and conscious beliefs were different.…

Stereotypes of people of color and minority races have been around for many years, and have proved themselves to dominate the perception of people of color in everyday life. Films portray people of color as they are perceived by white Americans, not how they truly are, unique. Film has only dirtied the minority races’ image over time, though if the movies were not made by other Americans, they were more accurate to their race. Stereotypes of Asians have been around for a long time, ever since Asians were introduced. Stereotypes such as Asian students are smarter, Asian women are more exotic and tend to wait on men, Asian women are submissive, Asian people are all from China, and many others.…

Damian A. Stanley, Peter Sokol-Hessner, Mahzarin R. Banaji and Elizabeth A. Phelps used Implicit Association Test (IAT) to test the strength of a person’s automatic association between face and if its pleasant or unpleasant [2]. The experiment is being studied because they realized that people tend to conclude quickly upon someone right after seeing their racial background. Psychological and neurological work had showed that trustworthiness evaluations are made rapidly and automatically. They wanted to find out if trustworthiness will be affect towards someone…

Television has proved to be an important factor in representing the identities of a vast and diverse America. As a powerful medium, television functioned as a way to observe people of different color, race, and ethnicity. The impact of the medium in representing a certain race has had a powerful influence on one’s attitude towards another person based on these depictions as seen on TV. More often than not, TV’s portrayals of the subordinate group in the United States had not been ideal compared to the dominant white race. Generally, scholars believed that the representation of the minority groups differs from the socially dominant position of the white, heterosexual male (Mittell 306).…

The main stream media’s lack of racial and sexual diversity is a growing problem in America. Sonia Saraiya, author of the article The Burden of Representation, talks about how the representation of minorities in the media is full of stereotypes, marginalizations, exploitations and misrepresentations from an industry that is almost solely based on appearances. The author is correct because there is lack of diversity in the main stream media, which leads to the formation of stereotypes, loss of self-esteem and lack of opportunities. One reason why there should be more representation in the media for minority groups is because it creates stereotypes for the next generation.…

It is a common saying that ‘first impression is the last impression’, and first impressions are often regarded as the cornerstones of forming human relationships. The thought process behind forming an opinion of another person is called impression formation, and it is based on the information we gather about a person before or directly after meeting them. In order to explain or predict impression formation, there have been multiple studies and experiments conducted on various theories that discuss how it can be influenced. Some of these theories can be applied to Stuart’s example, including central traits and stereotyping. Central traits refer to traits that effectively influence the process of forming an impression.…

These types of practices are used to prove what group is more superior among over another group or an individual (Feenstra, 2013). Today we live in a very cultural and ethnically world that embraces our differences. Because of the different beliefs and social practices that are not considered socially acceptable, people are sometimes discriminated against (Feenstra, 2013).
