Aphorisms are using quotes from or referring to a known author. In the article the author alludes to a quote from former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. In the article it says, “”Courage,” Winston Churchill said, “is the first of human qualities because it is the quality that guarantees all the others.” (Burke) This quote comes directly after the long narrative that described specific acts of courage performed by first responders on 9/11. Acts that would not be recognized if left out of the ceremony. It stands alone as its own paragraph almost as a summary or paraphrase of the story from that day. The quote comes from the prestigious Winston Churchill, a man who rallied the English together after attacks from the Nazi’s in World War Two, appealing to the audiences ethos or credibility. The audience can associate the 9/11 attacks with the attacks on Churchill’s Britain, as attacks that rocked the nations to their core.
