It is like a competition. Everyone is working so hard, so they can have money, and maintain a high pride of belonging in a powerful social class. According to Bertell Ollman, Marxist theory consist of being selfish because people that have a good social class do not have interest to learn or meet other people with a different status than their own. In the short story of “Night Drive”, the protagonist only cares about his family, and the people that are in the same status. One example that shows that the protagonist plays a selfish role is when Fonseca writes, “I came to a poorly lighted street, heavy with dark trees, the perfect spot. A man or a woman? It made little difference, really, appeared……... I turned off the headlights and accelerated. She only realized I was going for her when heard the sound of the tires hitting the curb. I caught her above the knees, right in the middle of her legs a bit more toward the left leg a perfect hit” (7). This quote shows that the protagonist did not care about the people of low class. In the short story “Night Drive” the protagonist manifest that he has superior opportunities like a good job, house and cars, and even he has someone that cook his meal. All this because of his social status. There are some parts I can agree with Marxism, and some parts that I disagree. I believe that a person should not be treated differently just because of their social class. Also, if high and middle class show the children that money comes easy, the children will grow up with that idea, and they will not learn how to make money or work hard. Marxism shows how money is really powerful in society. How money can influence a person’s life and decisions. Money is like a vacuum cleaner, it can absorb every value that a person have. People can have all the money that they can, but they are empty from inside. Society forgot about values because the only thing that they are focusing is about the power of
