In this project we constructed an apparatus that would allow an egg to descend from a two story window without breaking. The egg ended up cracking on impact due to our miscalculations. We could have prevented this by studying Newton's Three Laws of Motion and conservation of energy before we attempted the drop. We created our apparatus by inserting an egg into two cups connected together. We included steel wool and cotton in the two cup to absorb some of the impact. Secondly, we wrapped the two cups with a thick layer of clay to create a softer impact. Lastly, we applied steel wool two both ends of the cups for added padding. Newton's first law of motion is, “An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an external force.” In our …show more content…
One way we could have improved the end results of our project was by adding a parachute. A parachute would have created more air resistance, which would have decreased the impact on the egg. Another way we could have improved our project was by adding padding onto the side of the cups. When we dropped the apparatus the point of impact was on the side, and the side of our apparatus had very little protection. We could have added cotton and steel wool around the cups to add side protection. We also should have been more careful with the way we dropped the apparatus onto the ground by releasing it straight down. If we would have done this the egg possibly would have survived due to the cotton and steel wool providing protection from the hard impact on the ground. One more improvement that would have increased the chances of our egg surviving was by making our apparatus lighter. By making our apparatus lighter, the landing on the ground would have been softer. This would have put less stress onto the egg and possibly preventing it to
