Mr. Holland’s Opus Mr. Holland’s Opus is a film directed by Stephen Herek, released in 1995. The film is an American drama about a family named the Hollands. Glenn, the father and husband to Iris Holland, is a professional musician and composer who has been very successful in the past. Now that time has past throughout his life he would like to spend more time with his wife and settle down. Mr. Holland also would like to able tot compose his own orchestra show and accepts a high school teaching job. Very quickly it is known, that this high school job might not be for him. Holland did. Cole, being deaf, did not let his condition stop him from taking opportunities and becoming something. He became a teacher and proved to people that being deaf is just a condition, not a disability (Herek,1995). Schooling is also an issue in Mr. Holland’s Opus, decisions must be made if he should attend a school that teaches American Sign Language and orally. These issues occur in today’s society because many people believe that deaf people should be required to learn oral language to be able to communicate with hearing people although the deaf person cannot hear them. The argument is that most deaf people can read lips. Although, this is only partially true. . . statistics show on average only about 30% of the spoken language is understood by the deaf person (Berke, 2016). This was the Hollands case. Iris Holland and Cole, especially wanted Mr. Holland to make more of an effort to learn American Sign Language so he could communicate with him. Mr. Holland was upset because he couldn 't express his love for music with Cole because he couldn 't hear him, but he finally learned there is other ways that he could 've expressed his love through American Sign Language, but also he found out that Cole could feel the vibrations of the music. Mr. Holland also signed a song for Cole which made him appreciate his father and the love he had for music even more (Herek, 1995). This is a great example of family relations in Deaf culture and any family. If someone is willing to reach out and make an attempt to make someone’s life better then the family will be better. Research shows that in one in ten families at least one had a deaf family member (Bodner-Johnson, 2012). This is important because with these numbers being so high, we have to be aware of how Deaf culture feels and should reach out and try to communicate with
