In the poem, “Mother to Son”, by Langston Hughes, the lesson we can learn from the mother is that life is a universally difficult experience but—when it comes to pursuing dreams— you need perseverance and grit because nothing worthwhile ever is easy. Evidence for this is shown at the beginning of the poem. The mother compares her life to a staircase—specifically saying that her life hasn’t been “no crystal stair” (Line 2). The crystal stairs symbolizes the clearest and easiest road to take in regard to life; The path of least resistance, so to speak, and the mother feels that she has never had the pleasure of encountering such a fate. Hughes has been criticized for his depiction of the African American culture, but this poem gives light to the struggles of a mother who needs to guide her son. “Mother to Son” embodies this by comparing metaphorical stairs, one stair crystal and brilliant, and the other stair shoddy and dangerous. Hughes uses intricate figurative language to describe not only the stairs but also the mother’s struggles and aspirations. The mother speaks to her son in an intimate language, vernacular, with broken structure and double negatives, giving a truer idea of how mothers give encouragement to sons in the Harlem Renaissance time in the African America culture. I thought Langston’s use of point of view in the essay was very interesting. By telling the story from his younger selves point of view, he was able to take a very individualized view of religion- for him, belief in Jesus came down to seeing or feeling his presence. This conditional belief was really interesting to see, because, almost to counter it, Hughes originally believed in Jesus, was excited to see him, and couldn’t wait for him to come. He was still unwilling to ‘be saved’, however, until he had actually seen or felt Jesus. Rather than merely believe in his existence, Hughes wanted to see or feel his presence, to truly find him.…
