Montgomery began his assignment as leader of the 8th Army by raising the spirits of his troops. Before Montgomery was appointed in Africa, the 8th Army had been fighting Rommel’s troops and were exhausted and disheartened. This being known, Montgomery’s main goal, once he arrived in Africa, was to improve the spirits of his men. He regularly visited his troops in their units and made himself recognizable by wearing a black beret with two badges on it. When first assigned to the 8th Army Montgomery started to build up their morale so that they would be loyal to him and keep up the fight to the end. This paid off because his men never waivered, which allowed Montgomery to work on devising tactics to push through the heavy Axis defensive line. One tactic he came up with in the end was to attack at night because it would give cover to his engineers, and catch Rommel’s troops off guard when fighting began.
