People are born into this world unaware of their true purpose in life. It is only after death that the answer to this question is revealed. Mitch Albom’s The Five People You Meet in Heaven introduces the protagonist, Eddie, who dies an honourable death in the attempt of saving a little girl. The story follows Eddie into Heaven where he encounters five people who were significant in his life. Throughout the story, there are many instances of sacrifice that ultimately help Eddie discover his purpose on earth. Eddie fails to find value in his life as he assumes the little girl died along with him and identifies his life as a waste. Regardless of the outcome, Eddie’s life is not a waste because all lives are interconnected. Only after Eddie realizes …show more content…
He believes that the only way for him to have any value is to positively impact the world. Eddie is unable to find his purpose because he is oblivious to the meaning behind it. Jeff Noonan says, “Life-coherence means organizing society such that the life-value of individual lives serves the life-value of others in a conscious way - that we identify our good with the individuated contribution that we make to other’ lives” (Noonan 2016). From the moment Eddie wakes up in heaven, he questions the survival of the little girl. He is not able to find the answer until the end of the story so he assumes that his death was a waste. The Blue Man says, “No life is a waste [....] The only time we waste is the time we spend thinking we are alone.” (Albom, 29). The Blue Man explains to Eddie that every life has a purpose, even if that purpose does not become clear until after death. Eddie learns that his life and death are not a waste and that his life was meaningful. This is shown when he joins the army and when he takes care of his family. Eddie has positively impacts the world because his life influences the lives of others. The final person Eddie meets in heaven is a girl named Tala. She is killed in a fire during World War II in a burning barn, the same one that Eddie was headed towards. Tala tells Eddie that the reason she died was because Eddie did not save her. Eddie who is filled with horror and guilt, drops on his knees and wails. Tala questions him and he replies saying that he has accomplished nothing in life. Tala disagrees by telling him that his life is full of meaning as he kept kids safe on the rides and he made them smile. She then tells him that she died so that he could live because he

Hate boils as Danny Saunders, the leader of the Hasidic team, purposely hits a pitch right back at the pitcher, crushing his glasses and landing him in the hospital for a week. This book has taught me so much about how true love never fails no matter what happens. The little things in life matter more than the big things. Also that you should never judge someone by their appearance because they are different inside the things you can’t see with a human naked eye, you have to get to know that person to find the truly special, ideal things inside with the loving warm caring hearts. “People die, but love doesn’t,” I learned that even if people pass away there is still that true love that never escapes the hearts of people that are still here on earth. Just like when Marguerite passed away Eddie still loved her with all his heart and the same goes for Marguerite that even when she was in heaven.…

The Canadian written novel that I recently read is what goodreads would call “a tearfully hilarious, as funny and appalling as real life” novel titled “Strange Heaven”, written by Lynn Coady. I feel like it would be the perfect piece of literature to add to our school’s reading requirement. When you are reading a book you want a story that is relatable, creates a connection between you and the protagonist as well as a helps your developments of the grade 11 themes. It's like a seed sprouting in the spring, the seed grows and flourishes into a beautiful flower all through summer to only wither and die in the cold winter, but it must all take place in order to regenerate. As humans were lit up with the seed of aspirations to then face yourself with obstacles that you never expected. We all want to get to those aspirations or the blooming stage, but it is equally essential to pass by the bloom and face the unawareness of life's reality before the new seed can be born. In Paul Kalanithi’s memoir When Breath Becomes Air, he teaches the reader that although time is limited and death is inevitable, life can still be meaningful and have a purpose, even if it is as simple as helping an individual find the strength to overcome whatever hardships they may be forced to face. The beginning of the book starts off with Paul reflecting on what death is and what it means. In one event at the beginning of his book, years before being diagnosed with lung cancer, he was working as doctor and helping a pregnant woman who was having distress with her unborn twins. The twins ended up being born prematurely and since there was a lack of development in their organs, neither newborn survived longer than twenty-four hours.…

It’s tough to remember the first time that I heard the age-old question about the purpose of life because I’ve heard it so much. However, the first time that I really took time to think about this question was a few weeks ago. I recall waking up in the morning and asking myself a simple question, “What am I looking forward to today?” To my surprise, I couldn’t answer the question and I realized that I was currently living an extremely boring and meaningless life. I then stumbled upon another question, “What is the purpose of my life and what am I going to do in the future?”…
