Analysis Of Mistakes By Lewis Thomas

Many people struggle with the thought of failing, though failing is not the real thing you should be worried about, but rather the actions taken afterwards to improve your wrongs. Biologist Lewis Thomas describes this as being “ the very base of human thought, embedded there, feeding the structure like root nodules.” Without the mistake there is nothing to grow from and expand your knowledge on. If you were to get everything correct at all times there would be nothing to educate yourself with after the fact, making the reaction to be considered worthless. Thomas claims that “ If we were not provided with the knack of being wrong,we could never get anything useful done.” This hereby states that with the help of messing up,it allows one’s thoughts to broaden into finding new and improved ways of solving a mystery. Not only does Thomas believe that make a mistake is a good thing, but he considered it to be a “lucky day” in that having a day without a blunder is just an ordinary day. He is saying this simply because of the fact that he truly thinks that having a mistake is just one way to stretch the mindset of one person. Having what he is calling a “lucky day” does not compare to a day full of no flaws because the flaws are what encourage someone to expand their thoughts into new and more innovative ones. By going back and looking at the wrong in the situation you can finally see what needs to be changed and how to make that change in a sophisticated way. Thomas describes this as “The capacity to leap across the mountains of information to land lightly on the wrong side represents the highest of human endowments.” He is trying to get across that the action of getting to the wrong side is temporary and you will find the best solution to the problem in a matter of time, making it “highest of human endowments.” Reacting to a situation is what really sets apart the person from how they grow from the experience to the people who will rest on their laurels thinking that there is no solution.
