From this scene, we can see various withdrawal symptoms faced by drug addicts, in this case, Mark Renton. In the beginning of the scene, we can see Mark’s parents locking the door, which in a sense represents the feeling of entrapment and confinement which represents Marks feelings in relation to no longer having drugs as part of his lifestyle. As the scene progresses, we can see Mark struggling on his bed as he gets further away from the door. The door in a sense can be seen as the only escape for Mark from his drug dependence. It can be said that Mark’s guilt of the fact that only Spud had been imprisoned for the same crime he committed prevents him from breaking free as he feels undeserving of doing so. As the scene progresses, we see Tommy who is described as being a goody two shoe at the beginning of the movie. During one part of the scene, we can see Tommy dragging himself against the wall in a brightly lit room. As he progresses moving along the wall, we can see that the brightness as decribed earlier begins to fade. This shows that Tommy is slowly losing his goody two-shoe persona due to drugs. The scene then continues on with the baby facing the ceiling and slowly turning his head, making eye contact with Mark. The direct eye contact between the baby and Mark intensified Mark’s sense of guilt as he starts to scream and moves on his bed
