Throughout all the struggles they had back in 1865, they still pushed forward and continued educating others. Back then education was more important than money. Education opened up many doors. Most black people during that time didn’t enjoy the luxuries we get now with education. Being educated then, was better than any rich man and his processions. Some of the people would walk far, with no shoes just to go to school. Michelle made it clear in her speech that they had to fight and overcome many obstacles just to say they learned something in school that day. It is clear that she wanted us to make a commitment to education. Make a commitment to yourself and your future. She wanted us to understand that getting this right did not come easy, as she goes on in her speech about schools across Maryland being burned then. Teachers were getting beat and yet some people do not even finish high school. Education was freedom to the people in the 1860’s. Many people fought for our civil rights, they were passionate for it. They pushed and strived for freedom even with the odds against them. Her speech was very effective in some ways she could’ve added more diversity to it. She could have mentioned some struggles other races had with education. Some white people who helped were treated like villains. Immigrants had a hard time getting rights as well. I feel she could have elaborated o some of those things as well, since African Americans were not the only race that went through anything dealing with civil rights. Women in particular were not allowed many rights. I wish she could have talked about that more. I do understand why she went in the direction she did, since Bowie is a historically black college. Overall her speech was wonderful and eye opening. She was very direct in who she wanted to target. It is very sad that she even had very harsh things said about this speech. She had very good points and evidence to back her up. She wants to build a better future for the generations to come and only having education can bring about that change. So the next time you feel like giving up, just think of all those times people weren’t allowed to even read. Dig deep and go
