Between the challenges posed by economic class variability, the combining of technology and terrorism, and the continuous poverty of billions of humans pessimism has become a typical outlook on humanity's collective future. Many people are pessimistic, not that we could respond to the issues that beset us, but that we will respond to such issues. Pessimists claim that we lack the political or social will and global solidarity to make the choices necessary to put us on a positive track forward. I, however, disagree. When talking about technology and culture there are two very different sides: The Amish and social media giants such as Facebook and Twitter. The Amish claim to live a simpler and easier life due to their lack of technology since they are not tempted to keep up with their second virtual life that social media can create. They idealize their situation due to the lack of greed and wrongdoings that can occur when using social media, and claim to live a more connected life with stronger personal relationships. Although this thinking seems logical, and could be coveted by select people, I think this outlook on life fails to understand the true meaning of being human. One author explaining a similar technological dystopia that the Amish believe, analyzes why a person sees dystopia. He claims “a dystopia entails a cognitive and a pragmatic dimension at the same time. Cognitive in the sense that the very act of plotting allows a critical articulation between the real world and the possible ones created by fiction: fictionalized anticipatory knowledge stimulates the reader’s sense of possibilities” (Claisse and Delvenne 2015). Essentially, according to the article, people who foresee dystopia imagine a dystopian society from science fiction. This is common as it seems to be a fundamental human trait to make the negatives outweigh the positives. A common theme in all dystopian societies is a lack of unity as technology causes divide in the world. However, I believe that the world is only getting more connected as more innovation occurs with technology, most notably in social media. With social media, diverse opinions, new social movements, and different cultural practices are all available at the palm of our hand.
