“Collective fear stimulates herd of instinct, and tends to produce ferocity to those who are not regarded as members of the herd,” (Goodreads). This quote means that not everyone is accepted in the society we live in and that people do not like change. There are many types of discrimination and a lot of people have a hard time overcoming it and in the story Of Mice and Men, discrimination affects the characters Lennie by being treated inhumanly, Crooks being separated from the other guys on the ranch and by Curley’s Wife being given a bad reputation. The way Lennie is affected by discrimination is by society treating him like he is an animal because he is mentally ill. Lennie Small is a very big and strong guy, which kind of makes his name …show more content…
Crooks was an African American character who basically had a broken back. One example that shows how he was segregated is, “‘ Well I have a right to have a light. You go on and get outta my room. I ain’t wanted in the bunkhouse, and you ain’t wanted in my room.’” (Steinbeck 68). This quote shows that Crooks has his own room or living arrangements because of him being African American. Since he is separated from all the other men and not allowed into the bunkhouse, he does not want people in his room because he thinks it is only fair. Crooks is affected by being separated because it makes him lonely and makes him think he is less important. Another example that shows how Crooks is affected by being separated is, “This is just a nigger talkin’, an’ a busted-back nigger. So it don’t mean nothing, see? You couldn’t remember it anyways…” (Steinbeck 71). This is another quote from Crooks and he is saying that he is not as important as a white man and the fact that he has a broken back makes him even more less important or like nobody cares. This affects him because it makes him feel like he is a nobody. He lives all by himself with very little human contact and he does not like it at all. Overall, Crooks is affected by being separated from the other men on the ranch by him being locked away in his own room and by him feeling like …show more content…
She was affected by the guys giving her a bad reputation. Curley’s Wife is married to Curley and she does not have a name in the book other than Curley’s Wife to show that women are not as important as men in this time period. One example that shows how she is affected is, “She’s gonna make a mess. they’s gonna be a bad mess about her. She’s a jail bait all set on the trigger. That Curley got his work cut out for him. Ranch with a bunch of guys ain’t no place for a girl, ‘specially like her.” (Steinbeck 51). This is a quote from George to Lennie telling him to stay away from her because of how she acts. All of the guys on the ranch think she is an awful girl and that she shouldn’t be on the ranch. This makes her feel like she is unwanted and it makes her miss her dreams as a little girl of being an actor. Another example that shows how she was affected is, “You know what I think? Well, I think Curley’s married… a tart.” (Steinbeck 28). This is a quote from a character named Carlson. He is basically calling Curley’s Wife a slut. He is saying that she will look at other guys in the ranch like she wants to be with them even though she is married to Curley. She is affected by this because it makes her look like someone she isn’t. Everyone just assumes that she is a slut and nobody, even Curley, really knows who she is. Curley’s Wife is affected by being given a bad reputation because it makes her feel

John Steinbeck shows us discrimination throughout the book through different characters. Crooks is a man of color that works on the farm and lives in the barn. Steinbeck shows us that Crooks gets discriminated because of his race. Crooks tells Lennie how he feels about being the only black man on the ranch after Lennie goes into his room and they sit down to talk. “S’pose you couldn’t go into the bunkhouse and play rummy ‘cause you was black” Steinbeck (72)…

This quote portrays her as a lonely woman, which she probably is, but this also suggests that all women are needy and lonely. Next, Curley's wife confesses that, "I don't like Curley, he ain't a nice fella" (89). This can be interpreted as Steinbeck's way of saying that women do not actually like their husbands, they marry them simply to say they have a husband. Clearly this is a negative connotation of how Steinbeck views women. Lastly, Curley's wife is actually blamed for her own death.…

Being alone he normally gets defensive especially when someone white, such as Lennie visits because, Crooks bunk is his own and he likes to be in control of something for once, where he can set the rules, and call what is his. Crooks said, “You got no right to come in my room. This here’s my room” (Steinbeck 68). Also, no one wants to necessarily talk to Crooks because of his race. In chapter four Crooks implies to Lennie how a person can get or feel so lonely doing the same things everyday, being treated differently and he cried, “ I tell ya a guy gets too lonely an’ he gets sick” (Steinbeck…

The novel describes Crooks as an unliked black man that works and lives in the stables. Crooks is an average stereotyped African American during this time, being an uneducated, good for nothing scum that no one likes, and it is easy for others to show disrespect and lash out anger upon. Crooks in this case, doesn’t follow all of the stereotypes, because he is a man who wants to go against what society says in this stereotype and tries to be hardworking and educated. For the purpose of this essay, Crooks will still be used as an example. Crooks follows the stereotype because he works on the ranch for little to nothing and isn’t treated well, such as when George and Lennie were late and Candy said that the “‘boss gives him hell when he’s mad’”, when they weren’t on time, for instance (20).…

Charles Darwin’s physical evolution theories have applied to humans for thousands of years. Branched off of this belief, Hebert Spenser formulated theories about social natural selection in human societies that correspond with the physical survival of the fittest. When people have physical disadvantages, the way they are treated is altered and their chances of surviving in their societies lessen. In his novel Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck uses the characters of Candy, Crooks, and Curley’s wife to demonstrate that individuals are often victims of social injustice due to their age, gender, or race.…

Of Mice and Men can be considered an allegory since the characters and plot often suggest subliminal meanings. One can infer that the ranch is a small model of society, and different social groups are portrayed throughout the novella. Many groups are depicted, but three prominent groups are the handicapped, the segregated, and the rulers. Lennie represents the handicapped with his mental disabilities, Crooks, the only colored man on the ranch, would be the segregated, and Slim and Curley are vastly different types of rulers. To begin with, Lennie portrays both the mentally and physically handicapped in the sense that he needs assistance with everyday tasks.…

In the novel "Of Mice and Men" John Steinbeck, uses the character of Crooks to represent racism and symbolize the separation of the black community occurring at the time in which the novel was set. Crooks is significant as he provides an insight into the reality of the American Dream and the feelings of all the ranchers: their loneliness and need for human interaction. Steinbeck illustrates Crooks having an aggressive and defensive character when he and Lennie meet each other for the first time. This expresses Crooks since he uses a defence mechanism through loneliness to keep people away from him to stop him from getting into trouble. “A guy goes nuts when he ain’t got nobody” this reflects upon Crooks miss having company and makes him jealous of George and Lennie’s relationship…
