Crooks was an African American character who basically had a broken back. One example that shows how he was segregated is, “‘ Well I have a right to have a light. You go on and get outta my room. I ain’t wanted in the bunkhouse, and you ain’t wanted in my room.’” (Steinbeck 68). This quote shows that Crooks has his own room or living arrangements because of him being African American. Since he is separated from all the other men and not allowed into the bunkhouse, he does not want people in his room because he thinks it is only fair. Crooks is affected by being separated because it makes him lonely and makes him think he is less important.
