The individual that was interviewed was Melinda Smith. Melinda appeared to be 5ft and 4 inches tall. She wore what seemed to be a lavender color quarter sleeve top with slacks that appeared to be a Khaki color and a pair of black and cognac riding boots. Over her shirt, she had on a brown blazer with an infinity scarf wrapped around her neck twice. Her hair was natural and black. She wore her hair pulled back in one, with no makeup on. She did have some jewelry, a thin chain neckless, her wedding ring and a few other rings on her fingers. Melinda showed great posture; she was not slouching not once. She crossed her feet at the ankles.

Both of her parents are from Africa; her father is from Nigeria and her mother from Ghana. Her parents met in Ghana after her father moved from Nigeria to Ghana. There is no history of mental illness in her family. Melinda is the fourth oldest child out of seventeen, but her mother’s first. Her father is married to three wives. In her culture, men can marry as many wives as they please, as long as they have money. Her mother was the second wife, her father married. The first wife had five children, her mother had seven, and the third wife had five, by her father. Each wife and their children had a different house in the same community only a few blocks away from each other. The community raised she and her other sibling; the community helps raise each other children. Even though, they were a large family, they rarely got along, including the mothers. The only time they would see each other was during the Holidays (i.e. Christmas, Easter, etc.) and Sundays at church. The reason she felt she spent a large amount of her childhood with her uncle was a result of her father and mother did not get along. She barely spent time with her maternal grandmother because she lived in the rural area, but she was very caring. Melinda paternal grandmother passed away when she was a baby. Therefore, she did not know her. She mentioned that her paternal grandfather was very strict. He did not like her family because they were not from the same tribe her paternal grandfather. In Nigeria, fathers want their sons to marry from within the same tribe. He would refer to her and her other sibling as “Those children from the other country,” but she still think of him as a good man. She and her mother never got along with each other. She feels that her mother does not like her. She was not sure if it was due to the fact her father made her spend more time with her uncle than with her
