Fascinating Secret Lives Of Giant Clams Analysis

For my TED Talk critique, I watched Mei Lin Neo’s, “The Fascinating Secret Lives of Giant Clams.” In order to hook the audience, Mei Lin Neo starts by sharing some of the many nicknames she is called due to her constant discussion of giant clams. Beginning the talk this way is intriguing because even just speaking of her nicknames you can tell she is truly passionate about her work. Also, that she understands that her passion can lead to her talking non-stop about a topic that others may not find quite as intriguing. Continuing her introduction of the giant clam, Mei Lin Neo unveils a giant clam shell. The additional of a tangible visual aid, rather than just a picture, is particularly helpful here. Not only can the audience tell the size of the shell in comparison to a person, but it also compliments the story Mei Lin Neo tells of unsuspecting divers getting their legs eaten. However, Mei Lin Neo is unconvinced of the story and decides to use her own hand as bait to see if the stories of divers losing their legs was true. Here, Mei Lin Neo incorporates a simple joke by exclaiming, “I still have my hand.” The humor is well placed and keeps the audience engaged. …show more content…
While it’s a funny story and complimented with enjoyable jokes, it leaves her only four minutes to begin and finish a discussion over giant clams. Also, her introduction never includes why she is a trustworthy source on this topic. While I can assume she is an expert in her field, TED Talks are not given by just anyone, never does she mention where she conducts research or even who she is. Mei Lin Neo’s only introduction about herself was the nicknames her friends gave her; I only learned her name from the description of the

This totally made sense to me because without knowing a person’s language or how to speak with them you feel distant from them. If you know their language you can know something about their culture and history. The only thing that I noticed that would help the presentation was the slideshow. There were a lot of spacing and grammatical errors. This is understandable because translating is difficult and English is her second language but someone should have proof read the…

Perhaps you’ve been disappointed by news coverage or even been angry with reporters. You might feel obligated to happily agree to the point of laughter with the way that reporters are portrayed in this video. However, it is a jump in logic. Just because you agree that reporters are frustrating people, it doesn’t support the idea that you should laugh. But whether or not it is being used well, the use of Pathos tends to work on most…

    Giant Squid Research Paper

One reason that many believed that the giant squid was a passive hunter was the amount of ammonium in its tissues. There are two groups of squid in relation to density in water; the first are denser than water and must swim to stay afloat, the second are “nearly neutrally buoyant” (Clarke et al. 1979). The giant squid falls into the second category; it remains buoyant because of ammonium chloride filled pockets in its muscles, which balance its density. This means that it does not need to be active to stay in the water column, freeing it to lie in wait for food to happen by. Recent evidence has shown that the squid is a much more active hunter than previously believed.…

I watched the Ted talk video, “The fascinating secret lives of giant clams” by Mei Lin Neo. This speech essentially entails information regarding giant clams, such as their basic size or growth status and most importantly how important/essential they are to their aquatic environment/ecosystem. While this speech was well presented and very informative, there are a few points in which Mei Lin Neo falls short on. Starting with her good points first, she was very confident regarding her topic, which can be seen through her enthusiasm and passion. As even from the start of her speech you can see the amount of good energy she held and seem to transfer to her audience throughout her speech.…

What a game changer this speech was! This speech at first was not very interesting and I do not really know why, but I kept listening, watching, and reading the script… I loved it. The author/speaker’s purpose of this Ted Talk called “Jon Ronson: Strange answers to the psychopath test” by Jon Ronson is to inform viewers of one important mental illness, psychopathy, and his personal experience with psychopathy. It’s the way that the word gets out; billions upon billions of ideas for business, classroom activities, etc. are spread through presentations. With presentations come some jitters, but Andrew Bradbury states a plan in his book “Successful Presentation Skills (2010)” that winds up to be the first key element to a successful presentation. Having a game plan before stepping on stage in front of an audience sounds like common knowledge, but it’s more than just a game plan. Bradbury (2010) lists a Seven Basic Step to take on any idea. First, the presenter must think about what they want to achieve by presenting, then reflect on if a formal presentation is the best way to get the word out, leading to what form the presentation will take, then the…
