The character I'm most like appears in a book called The Impossible Knife of Memory, this story is about a girl named Hayley Kincain and her journey of dealing with a new school and her dad’s PTSD and addiction. I feel like I relate to Hayley for a couple of different reasons some being we both moved schools lots of times, our dads’ addictions, and the constant struggle of keeping our home life a secret.
First off Hayley is a military brat which means she moved around a lot, and because of that she learned not to get attached to a certain place or people. When Hayley’s dad is honorably discharged he starts to develop PTSD and begins drinking because of this he can’t seem to hold a job down. As a result they move back to her Hayley's mom’s hometown in need of a fresh start. This is when things start to play out, new school, new people, and a new job for her dad. First off, is both of our dads are alcoholics and in ways we both know why we do things we do to try and hide it. Hayley and I both try to hide our home life from our friends and make up stupid excuses as to why we can't have them over to our house. Another way that we are similar is the way we think, we put ourselves into groups, one way Hayley does this is when she says “There are two types of people in this world: 1.Zombies 2. freaks.” I believe in this statement that Hayley made there are only two types of people mine being robots and outcasts. Lastly, our lifestyles are pretty similar, we both used to move a lot, with every move comes new people, new school, and new town/city. I used to move a lot because of my mom's job and I got used to not getting to close or too attached to any person or place, this was Hayley’s way of thinking in the book too.
