Why are men so sensitive when it comes to their masculinity? Most men try to act tough because this is how our society think about men, they have to be strong and unemotional. We have learned that men don’t cry, regardless of the situation if you’re a man, you have to hold it. In the Glass Castle, Jeannette Walls shows masculinity in the book through her father, Rex Walls. Masculinity is a phenomenon that has been around for so long, it became the normal thing for men. He is a smart man but you can not be smart and alcoholic at the same time. He does not share any of his feelings with his kids or his wife. Rex Walls always talks about his interesting stories to hide that he is a big loser. Jeannette said, “Mom, however, told us that the FBI wasn’t really after Dad; he just liked to say they were because it was more fun having the FBI on your tail than bill collectors”(19). Rex tries to hide his failure in life by telling stories about himself that is not true. He doesn’t talk with his family about what he really feels, he just leave everything behind and drink until he doesn’t feel anything around him. Rex tried to stop drinking and wanted to be successful for a little while, but he eventually slipped back into his old drinking habits. I think that Rose Mary stayed with him even though she didn’t like his drinking problems. Jeanette said, “He came home in such a drunken fury that Mom usually hid while we kids tried to calm him down. He broke windows and smashed dishes and furniture until he’d spent all his anger” (112). I think that maybe Jeannette stopped believing in her father so much after she sees just how awful the alcohol made him. Maybe it's so hard for Rex to stay sober because his childhood wasn't that great. He doesn't know how to properly express himself any other
