After listening to the James Brown song, it is easy to hear that the rhythm of the song catches your hear. The rhythm of the songs definitely make them a obvious choice to keep the party going. The first parts in Funky Drummer that I would sample is from 2:00 to 2:30, where the saxophones seems to be in a groove. it does not have any shouts or grunts during this part. That part is just solid and clean, and the beat just grabs you rhythmically.…
kay, so now we know about timshel, but it's also Adam's last word before he dies (at least it wasn't something totally random like rosebud). He says it right after Lee gets him to give Cal his blessing, i.e. show that he loves him as a son and free him from the guilt of "killing" his brother. It's a moment where things are at a crossroads for Cal: he could go on hating himself for what he has done and thinking that his dad died hating his guts, or he can be free and go on to break the Cain-Abel curse that seems to follow the Trask family around. As Lee says to Adam, "Give him his chance"…
Ain’t No Makin It, a mind-altering book that dives into the livelihoods of “The Hallway Hangers” and “The brothers”. Two groups of boys that live in the run down housing estate of Clarendon Heights. Jay MacLeod divulges into the occupational ambitions of the boys by submerging himself into their lives on three distinct occasions. In the past 60 years, the unstable frame in which the world was built, began to truly change by commencing to form into a world where every individual will one day be accepted for who they are no matter their race or colour. The belief that white people were better than others had been accepted in imperialist nations for generations. Although, some inspirational individuals who have opposed suprematism, their values and beliefs differed from the majority but still voiced equality for all human beings. Although worldwide equality and freedom has not yet been established much has been achieved and credited to freedom fighters in the 1960’s. During this time two inspiring men fought for freedom in their own ways; Charles Perkins and Martin Luther…
In the novella Of Mice and Men written by John Steinbeck the main protagonist and his friend’s relationship reflect the lyrics of the song written by Lifehouse. When first introduced to the characters, the reader originally thinks that Lennie is dependent on George. In truth, George needs Lennie just as much to survive. To open, despite George constantly saying that he should have left Lennie a long time ago, he never does until the very end when he is forced by the circumstances. On page 11, George says: “‘ If I was alone, I could live so easy.…
He had a stable home, a loving mother, and safe friends, all of which contributed to George's wellbeing. In George's life, he was lucky to have been influenced by positive adults. Though the unstable and dangerous elders greatly outnumbered the good, George allowed himself to be taught by healthy role models, and view unhealthy adults as lessons. He was wary of drug dealers, addicts, and gang members, understanding that taking the wrong path could result in addiction, beating, jail time, or death.…
Under the Influence: Discrimination Since the start of the 21st century, racial diversity has increased and the nation’s minority population has grown substantially. Minorities today are the majority in many parts of the country. Studies predict that if current rates of the national population continue to trend the way it has for the past 20 year, then by 2035, minorities will outnumber non-Hispanic caucasians. There are many benefits and advantages of diversity, however, there are also challenges and barriers. It is important to note that the very communities that are growing are also the ones that are experiencing significant obstacles, disparities and discrimination.…
Memories, with or without context, play a key role as plot devices in both Away from Her and “Bear Came Over the Mountain.” Used to provide context for their only semi-chronological story lines, memories in the story and movie alike give solid glimpses of the past that allow the plot to move forward. One of the most prominent memories, in both the story and the movie, and certainly the clearest of the latter, is the section in which Grant and Fiona go on a walk/ski in a park. The substantial differences between the scene and the passage, range from difference in dialogue to difference in visuals. This section is an excellent example of the drastic differences sometimes found in adaptations, and allows for the presentation of a case for the…
In the Song of Solomon we go beyond further, we become able to fly, we leave all the material possessions behind, all the fakeness that we are born with all must be gone. In the article “Song of Solomon: To Ride the Air”, the author Dorothy H. Lee explains how important is for us to learn to fly and how this is related to going forward. Flying means to leave the ground, to go further than forward, even though when this seems to be really difficult and we might not be prepared to “leave the ground”. Dorothy H. Lee states that to learn to fly implies to make a change in our life, but it’s required for us in order to go forward; “He is unprepared to flight. Gradually, Milkman will, in the course of the novel, have to learn the secret - something…
After reading this novella I still believe George was a good friend because he did it for the obvious reason to not hurt Lennie. In the book George shows his friendship when he always tried to look out for Lennie's well being whether he liked it or not. For example, when George took the dead mouse away from Lennie, he only did that because he didn't want Lennie to get sick from the diseases the mouse could have carried diseases (Steinbeck Page 6). Another thing…
In America, a general consensus exists around the idea that education is imperative to a successful future. This idea falls in line with the achievement ideology, the center of the fabled American dream. The achievement ideology states that if you work hard and try your best then the world is your oyster. However, when analyzing Jay MacLeod’s novel “Ain’t No Makin’ It”, the film Rize, and government statistics, it is clear that there are multiple significant flaws within America’s education system and how it plays into the achievement ideology and social reproduction. MacLeod’s novel tells the story of two groups of impoverished teenagers, nicknamed the Hallway Hangers and the Brothers.…
The 1960s was a tumultuous decade for the United States. Along with the escalation of the Vietnam War, this decade was rocked by the Civil Rights movement and the second wave of the Feminist movements, creating an immense amount of social tension. As a result, people turned to politically-charged music, predominantly Rock n’ Roll, to release their frustrations. However, an equally important musical genre, Soul, was left in the background. Despite the fact that Soul music was not as popular in the United States, artists such as Aretha Franklin released many politically-charged songs that advocated for social justice.…
And it comes to this again, George didn’t want to watch his best friend that he had known for years suffer and die in pain. So George did it. I think it was in George’s best interest to do…
Music Composer for To Kill a Mockingbird • “Ultralight Beam” by Kanye West is the first song on this soundtrack. The second verse by Kelly Price talks about how “You persecute the weak / Because it makes you feel so strong,” similar to when Atticus talks about how Mayella is putting this man on trial so she doesn’t have to deal with the fact she kissed a black man. They both possess the mood of being somber. The song makes you feel as if there are problems that have been corrected and you finally feel free. The book, however, highlights the racial divide between whites and blacks.…
