But when she saw that she did nothing but break an old woman?s spirit she felt remorse. She realized that what she had done was childish and selfish. The experience of finding out about real life and problems hardened her. But not in a bad way, in a way that made her stronger and prepared her for the real world, in a way that turned her into an adult. Mrs. Lottie taught her that a bit of beauty isn?t such a bad thing.
