Domestic Violence Against Women Analysis

Margaret Umeed’s article is discussing that both men and women are domestically abused. She includes many statistics including that men have a two in five chance (40%) of being abused by a domestic partner. This statistic is not just based off of married couples. This goes for all different relationships, including heterosexual relationships, and same sex relationships, and both either married or unmarried. Men have a tendency to not tell people or report their abuse due to the sexist stigma that men have to be masculine and dominant and any form of domestic violence or abuse can be seen as being weak. This study discusses the realities of domestic violence, stating that, “domestic violence is more dangers than cancer, motor vehicle accidents, war and malaria”. Srivastava states that domestic violence against men by women is extremely ignored due to society’s social norm of masculinity. The research done by Srivastava is all about observing the degree and pattern of domestic abuse against men and the causes of domestic abuse as well. One of the studies that they did was they documented a group of fifty men comparing their attitudes, values and feelings. In the end of the study, they ended up comparing their results to study the causes of domestic violence in men. The study has shown that men who are married report domestic violence more than men who are not married. A few of the statistics that have been shared discuss that women were overrepresented as victims of domestic violence in comparison to men. Henning and Feder stated that research presented by Straus found out that 53.1% of women hit first, comparing to 42.3% who reported that their male partner started the initial hostility. One of the more prominent comparisons this article has made comparing men and women in domestic violence is that women are more likely to get physically injured in comparison to men; as well as women are more likely to require medical attention for their injuries. When it comes to Henning and Feder’s research, it shows that women are more likely to get arrested in a duel-arrest situation, as well as women being more likely to be charged with a felony in comparison to their male partners or spouses. On the other hand, men were arrested more often due to violation of protection orders and men also had a higher rate of substance abuse.
