Breathing air, the mermaid through her nose and Simu through his blowhole, they floated on the surface together.
Then Mara said, "Simu, I cannot leave you alone. You are much too new. Come home with me, and I will see if the mother manatee Sirena will care for you." Simu nodded, nestling happily against Mora's shoulder.

And so he followed Mara away to the colorful coral ledges where they found Sirena and her baby grazing on sea grasses. "Sirena, Mara said, "I have found this little one who needs someone to care for him. Can you help?" The manatee, chewing her noonday meal, raised her head slowly while looking at Mara and Simu. Simu looking hopefully at Sirena, moved close to her, lowered his head slowly and pretended to graze with her on sea grasses.

"As you can see, child, I already have a baby, and he is always hungry. Gathering enough food for just the two of us every day is all I can manage now. You must find someone else to care for Simu," Sirena declared. And she turned away to continue her grazing. "Well," sighed Mara, "that is just what I will do. Follow me, Simu." Tragedy is intended to expose humans of their fallibility and hubris. In the short story “Mermaids”, Richard Van Camp illustrates a young man, Torchy forgets his grandfather’s warning to him after giving Torchy a bless to win in the gamble. Torchy’s lust for money and sex leads himself to his own tragedy. “Mermaids” is a tragedy because Torchy’s tragic flaw undermines his judgment that leads to his misfortune; however, it elicits fear and pity in the end that enables readers to experience catharsis.Ultimately, the readers learn the essence that money cannot buy happiness.…

The Grand Canyon is quite the sight to behold, as Walker Percy states in “The Loss of the Creature,” but how can humans embrace their experience of the Grand Canyon if they possess “the symbolic complex which has already been formed in the sightseer’s mind”(1)? This complex which some might not even know they posses. Percy discusses his theory that humans are not getting the full value of life by unintentionally accepting their roles as a passive consumer, allowing them to be persuaded without knowing. He explains how humans have lost their sovereignty, but provides a number of solutions to try and help the individual remove this disastrous mindset. Percy explains this in two…

When I first watched Disney 's version of "The Little Mermaid" when I was younger, I knew there was something wrong with Ariel giving up her voice. I was so annoyed at her for making that decision -- Why would she give up her talent and her ability to talk for Prince Eric? What was even the point of doing that if she couldn 't talk to him? After now having read the original Hans Christian Anderson version, this time with a feminist theoretical lens applied to the story, I better understand why elementary-school-me recognized the problem with the mermaid giving up her voice: Women having a voice, and having it heard, is something for which feminists have fought hard. At times, "The Little Mermaid" encourages female readers to not use their…

“Dammit den mother, I never had any choice in that matter. I hadn’t exactly been having the most normal dreams lately, not Ell standing in a corning singing “Tip toe through the tulips” but not the normal ones I’ve known 300 plus years. When will you stop hanging that over my head? I get it you don’t approve that I had to do things for my mother, but tried my best to stop what I can when I could. I stopped them from getting Laura didn’t I? I sacrificed myself, which I didn’t have to do. I think that whatever big bad was took Laura and everyone else. Not just the angler fish. Oral history and written accounts are products of memories, which are transformed into text for future civilizations to store and analyze. It is important for different cultures to instigate the importance of retaining memory as it through this trait that their accomplishments and failures will be remembered. Nevertheless, memories face a fatal flaw considering they are the product of humans, who are inevitably driven by specific interests including political, self, and economic to manipulate the past to push their respective ideologies.
