In the article “Cinderella” and the Loss of the Father Love,” Schechtman argues, “... father’s distance keeps everyone in need” (297). As seen in the film,Ty needs the support from a father in which he depends on to help him grow. Marisa also needs a father figure in order to have a dependable male role model to her son. Both Ty and Marisa can feel the loss of him in their lives which creates a much harder life for the both of them. Without a father figure, a family can often be considered dysfunctional, even if they look functionally sound. Schectman goes on to discuss the “...father’s greatest contribution to a family’s life may be in the support of [a] mother in her nurturing and containing role” (292). Schectman’s claim provides strong evidence on the idea of a father being able to help support the mother who is supporting the child. Throughout the film Ty, like Cinderella, represents hope for all people; creating the dream that one can go from having nothing to having everything. Ty also experiences the struggles that go along with living with a father much like in the fairy tale. Ty feels as though he does not deserve to be loved due to not being respected, but in the end finally understands he is not the issue. The characters in Maid in Manhattan, especially his father, are blinded as to how wonderful Ty is. As seen in the fairy tale, both Ty and Cinderella will do anything necessary to obtain their happily ever after.
