Gandhi’s words carried into the Indian Constitution, especially in the list of fundamental duties and rights. The duties of Indian citizens include promoting harmony and the spirit of common brotherhood and to abjure violence, while the fundamental rights of education, protection of minority interest, and prohibition of discrimination based on religion, race, caste, sex or place of birth were all values that Gandhi held as the utmost priority. He also inspired Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela in their crusade for civil equality, creating a legacy of calm peaceful protest through his words and actions against violent protest.
