This throws Lucy into a state where she thinks that David cannot offer her a better option that what she already has. His efforts of convincing Lucy that the country is dangerous and inhabitable and that they should go live in a more civilized environment with David does not seem to baffle her. Instead, the incident seems to tie her even more to the country and the people. This can be seen on how Lucy’s relationship changes with Petrus after the assault. They transform from being just neighbors to family. They look out for each other and are more inclined to one another that before. Even at Petrus party when the boy shows up, Lucy does not inform Petrus or even gets the police involved but instead opts to have a quiet exit so as not to mess up Petrus’s big event even though she is very upset on seeing him at the party.
Later in the novel we come to find out that Lucy is pregnant as a result of the rape incident, she makes the decision to marry Petrus as a means of protection. It is very obvious that there is not much love or personal connection between Petrus and Lucy but as a result still continue to coexist with one another in their own way. They both help one another as Lucy helps him achieve great social status while Petrus helps in taking care of her and her child when he or she will be
