One can agree that in a good relationship both partners grow and learn from each other. Moreover, in a relationship a person can find themselves. From the novels Tooth and Claw, Shiloh, A&P, and Hills Like White Elephants. The two characters from the four novels mentality about love developed the most were Junior’s and the American girl’s. Not only did Junior and the American girl’s mentality as well as love grew but the person themselves grew as well.
The character Junior in the beginning of “Tooth and Claw ” is illustrated as a grown man with the mentality of a 14 year old. Junior’s description of how he portrays women and his apartment describes a man that has not mentally grown or matured for their age. Junior admits he only leaves his aunt's house to live a little rather than grow because he states, “I’d first moved out to the

The American girl becomes very vexed in how selfish her significant other is that she says, “Would you please please please please please please please stop talking” (Hemingway 185). This quote shows that she had enough of his compulsive lies. What had woken her up to understand he wouldn’t love all of her is when she’s aware he doesn't love her the way she thought he did after he says, “ But I don’t want anybody but you. I don’t want any one else” ( Hemingway 185). Meaning, he only wanted her, he didn’t want a baby. The only good thing that came out of her breakup is the lesson she learned. Which was, guys will say anything to get what they want and that if her significant other couldn’t give her the sympathy she wanted, he wasn’t the one. He was manipulating her feelings for him to make her do what he wanted like some men do today to accomplish the goal of the procedure. Many women have their own form of manipulation like Hemingway demonstrated with Jig, She was on the fence about the abortion and she kept asking the American questions looking for reassurance to either abort or keep the child to which she was met with answers that did not soothe her conscience. In short of everything the American was telling Jig about going through with the abortion so that they could be happy she has questions asking if they could be happy even if they had the baby showing that Jig was more invested in the relationship than the American was. As she realized she was not going to get the reaction she wanted from the American Hemingway has her character start to almost guilt trip the American by acting…

In the short story “Hills like White Elephants,” the author Ernest Hemingway creates a very complex relationship between an American man and woman. The majority of the passage involves the two having a deep conversation about an abortion that seems rather confusing at first to the reader. The couple bickers back and forth with each other about a certain “operation” that the woman is supposed to be having. At the end of the story, the author has one last paragraph that describes the man walking away from his female companion and observing the other people waiting at the train station they are at. This scene displays a better understanding of the kind of relationship the man and woman have while expressing in dialogue what both of their thoughts are concerning the operation.…

According to Merriam-Webster dictionary Walter’s dwarfism is a disability because it is a “condition of being able to do things in a normal way”. Even though Walter did not let size get in the way of letting him live his life, he was still considered to have a disability because his height causes him to perform everyday functions differently. Dwarfism was the cause that Walter was separated from his mother. The two stories I chose in this comparison are “Hills Like White Elephants” by Ernest Hemingway and “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. In both stories the female characters are pressured to listen to their significant other, triggering the end of their relationship by the end of the stories. In “Hills Like White Elephants”, the American man pretends to care for her (Jig) and is trying to manipulate her into having an abortion by sweet talking her, but Jig is still on the fence about it. The narrator in “The Yellow Wallpaper” however lets her significant other make the decisions for her like forbidding her from doing any kind of activities like writing, all because she is suffering from a nervous disorder. In the following paragraphs,…

In the short stories, “Hills Like White Elephants by Ernest Hemingway and “The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Gilman, the authors demonstrate how the two men suffer from mental illness by portraying their domination of women for their own desires. Through the readers perceptive, one can gain interest in these stories through how the egoistic characters, American and John, are dominating their women for personal satisfaction. American and John show similarities through their lust, pride and betrayal in each of these stories. For instance, American wants the girl to get an abortion so he can free himself from a problem that he has helped created and is not convenient for his lifestyle. In Timothy D. O’Brien’s criticism of Ernest Hemmingway’s “Hills Like White Elephants,” he concentrates mainly on how allusion and word play contribute to the central conflict of the short story. The story mainly consists of the dialogue between the American and Jig. The choice of the nickname Jig, along with the repetition of certain words such as “know” and “fine” stood out to me while reading the story. In addition to the word choice, the train never comes at the end of the story, leaving it open for interpretation. The O’Brian discusses these word choices in “Allusion, Word-Play, and the Central Conflict in Hemingway’s ‘Hills Like White Elephants’” used by Hemingway in “Hills Like White Elephants” play a huge part in the overall conflict…

Alisha Saxena Philosopher, Plato, in his published work, Allegory of the Cave, describes a dialogue with Glaucon about the importance of truth and human nature. This in depth discussion about reality is expanded on throughout Plato’s book, The Republic. Plato uses The Republic in order to convey how morality and virtue is of utmost importance. Plato’s purpose of Allegory of the Cave is to communicate that our perceptions of the truth are limited, and how the truth might not always be what is predicted or imagined. He further supports this purpose by using extended metaphors, intense, connotative diction, and an eloquent, questioning tone.…

Author Robert Tew once stated, “the struggle you’re in today is developing the strength you need for tomorrow.” Although people struggle in life, they must not focus their minds on the struggle, instead they should look at the positive impacts that come from the struggle. Living a fortunate life doesn't mean that a person will not face any differences or any problems to overcome. Living a content life is about being able to conquer everything that can be a distraction in one’s life by being able to see nothing but what they have been gifted with. Doing this requires a person to dig very deep, to notice that they are blessed.…

Throughout the whole story Hemingway presents a lot of diction in order to highlight key points to highlight the issues that the American and the young girl had with being pregnant. Then after stating that the unborn child has made them both miserable diction is able to depict “... And afterwards they were all so happy.” (230). The diction of that line that the author implemented was to indicate sarcasm since the American really just doesn’t want the child and puts the sarcasm to emphasize how he is selfish and rather live his life than be stuck taking care of a…
