Thomas wanted to feel tough and he wanted people to see how “cool” he was by throwing the ball at Craig. However The University causes a change because after sophmore year Thomas was already being a good student, therefore he remembered when he was in high school he tried a lot to become the poular kid in middle school. That time he cared about social status. But when he got into college everything changed. According to Williams, “Even as I read more philosophy and literature I retained a small and limited conception of the world around me….” (165). This qoute is saying that Thomas is realizing how stupid of him it was to think that social status was important when he was in high school. Now that he’s reading more he starts learning that social status wasn’t important, that thanks to the university he nows knows more about what’s going on in the world.
