Compare And Contrast A Raisin In The Sun

In the play “ A Raisin IN THE SUN by author Lorraine Hansberry” takes place in the south side of Chicago in a predominantly African American community during the mid 1950’s with a hardworking multi-generational family called the Younger’s, who live in the same worn out apartment for the past six generations. The Younger’s consists of five main characters: Ruth, the mother and daughter in law, Walter Lee, the son and husband to Ruth, Beneatha, the sister of Walter lee, Travis, the son of Walter Lee and Ruth, and Mama, the grandmother. Problems arise when Mama learns that the insurance check for ten thousand dollars from her deceased husband will be arriving in the mail when Walter Lee wants to use the ten thousand dollars to open up a liquor store, but, Mama, who has strong faith in God does not feel comfortable allowing her son to use the money for something that she does not believe in. I feel that the play and the movie some differences such as, in the opening of the movie, the setting does not only take place at the Younger’s apartment, but it shows various others places such as, the bar that Walter would go to get a drink at. In addition, Mama in the in the play is portrayed as this older women and grandmother that has a strong faith in God, but in the movie she seems less calm and more upset and angrier towards the rest of the family especially Walter. I feel that the play and movie both clearly demonstrate the struggles to provide a better home on a lower class income. I feel that this is something that we still struggle with today because there are a lot of poor immigrants and Americans today that work multiple jobs to provide the basics for their
