Good can be viewed as morally right or righteous while bad can be defined as immoral or malevolent. Human nature isn’t good or bad but daily surroundings in our lives affect our decisions. In the novel Lord of the Flies (1954), some boys get stranded on an island and lose sense of their personal identity and most become complete savages, because of the lack of civilization. On the contrary, in Hamlet, every decision Hamlet decides is not because he is evil or mad but, because of his beliefs or outside occurrences such as Claudius killing his father that shape Hamlet’s decisions. Human nature isn’t good or bad but humans have a choice to make that is usually affected by our circumstances. Gabriella Karin, an 82-year-old Holocaust survivor states that, “Circumstances sometimes make people do bad things (Chiorazzi)”. “She continues by adding, what if there were a decree in America that for 24 hours, you could do anything you wanted-murder, robbery, rape-and not have any consequences? (Chiorazzi)”. She makes us turn the mirror on ourselves, and revaluate how human nature works. Betty Hyatt another Holocaust says that when she visited France she hid during the Holocaust. Piggy says that half the island was set on fire by the boys, and everyone is going insane and realize it’s a bad thing. Although the boys feel power and no one will punish them for what they did. They acted without fear of punishment and can be seen as a loss of innocence or civilization. “The rock struck Piggy a glancing blow from chin to knee; the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and caused to exist (Shmoop Editorial Team)”. This is basically the end of civilization on the island. Ralph is the only one who is considered innocent since Piggy died.
