Human Nature: Good Or Evil In Lord Of The Flies

Good can be viewed as morally right or righteous while bad can be defined as immoral or malevolent. Human nature isn’t good or bad but daily surroundings in our lives affect our decisions. In the novel Lord of the Flies (1954), some boys get stranded on an island and lose sense of their personal identity and most become complete savages, because of the lack of civilization. On the contrary, in Hamlet, every decision Hamlet decides is not because he is evil or mad but, because of his beliefs or outside occurrences such as Claudius killing his father that shape Hamlet’s decisions. Although written in different time periods both tragedies show how our human nature becomes corrupt because of our surroundings. Even though, in Lord of the Flies displays …show more content…
Human nature isn’t good or bad but humans have a choice to make that is usually affected by our circumstances. Gabriella Karin, an 82-year-old Holocaust survivor states that, “Circumstances sometimes make people do bad things (Chiorazzi)”. “She continues by adding, what if there were a decree in America that for 24 hours, you could do anything you wanted-murder, robbery, rape-and not have any consequences? (Chiorazzi)”. She makes us turn the mirror on ourselves, and revaluate how human nature works. Betty Hyatt another Holocaust says that when she visited France she hid during the Holocaust. Some people risked their lives to help save her family. What happens around us usually affects how we act, and what decisions we …show more content…

Piggy says that half the island was set on fire by the boys, and everyone is going insane and realize it’s a bad thing. Although the boys feel power and no one will punish them for what they did. They acted without fear of punishment and can be seen as a loss of innocence or civilization. “The rock struck Piggy a glancing blow from chin to knee; the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and caused to exist (Shmoop Editorial Team)”. This is basically the end of civilization on the island. Ralph is the only one who is considered innocent since Piggy died. All the boys rapidly adapt to the environment and lose their personality just like in Zimbardo, which causes them to make bad decisions and become

Golding explains, “A pall stretched for miles away from the island. All the boys except Piggy started to giggle; presently they were shrieking with laughter,”(45). This line further demonstrates the understanding of how the boys are automatically engrossed into savagery so that it produces ignorance away from civilization, especially with the fact that the boy with a mulberry-color scar on his face perishes in this fire. Finally, Golding states the steps Piggy and Ralph take early on to prevent savagery, which unfortunately go to vain. Piggy exclaims, “‘But the first time Ralph says 'fire' you goes howling and screaming up this here mountain.…

The novel begins with boys from England, ages six through twelve, dropped on a remote island without civilization, causing the group of boys to fend for themselves for months without adult supervision. When Piggy and Ralph visit Jack’s tribe to ask for Piggy’s glasses back, the boys decide to attack Piggy and Ralph instead of using civil reasoning. As a result, Piggy ends up dying to the barrage of rocks pelted upon him. Piggy’s death symbolizes the end of all order and civilization on the island because he was the only boy left who cared about rules and order. Golding described Piggy, “Piggy's arms and legs twitched a bit, like a pig's after it has been killed.” This description by Golding infers that Piggy was just another pig that Jack and his tribe would hunt in the forest.…

The boys, after being stranded for some time, begin to convert to a different way of living and the fire is usually seen as burning low or not at all, showing how more and more boys no longer have the desire for rescue and favor a savage lifestyle. As more boys joined Jack’s tribe of hunters and “having fun,” few remain to keep the fire going, and eventually only Piggy is by Ralph’s side. The other boys see Jack as their leader now, who leads by violence and chaos. Jack’s tribe kills Piggy and destroys the conch, and at the end of the book, sets fire to the island when trying to hunt and kill Ralph. Ironically, it is that fire with the purpose of destruction that summons a ship for rescue.…

I believe human nature is naturally good depending on perspective. Most young children are nice to most people due to good nature and not being influenced by the world but by their parents. Teenagers are where people become their own person and develop their own meaning of ‘good’ and straying off from their parents. By the time people are adults they have become their own person and have been corrupted in their own way. September 11, 2001 and the Paris Bombing are good examples of different perspectives of good.…

Good vs. Evil in Lord of the Flies Does evil always prevail? Some say yes, some say no, but no was nearly the case in William Golding Lord of the Flies. “Good” and “evil” are very broad terms, but easily distinguishable in general. Good can be nearly anything with a positive connotation, but in the case of Lord of the Flies, it typically is anything that sticks to typical morals and values, whereas evil is immoral and barbaric acts that symbolize a regression to a primal nature. The conflict between this type of good and evil can be seen everywhere, religious texts, novels, nearly anything involving a protagonist against a person, force, or themselves.…

The Fight for What Is Right Morals guide people throughout life and its challenging circumstances. People rely on their sense of morality to remain constant so that they can determine what is good and what is evil. However, the ever changing environment provides new circumstances that often conflict with a person’s seemingly unbreakable morals. The boys in Lord of the Flies by William Golding undergo traumatic experiences that put their morality to the test. In Lord of the Flies, the struggle of Ralph, Jack, the hunters, Piggy, and Simon to resist evil and remain good while on the deserted island proves how the novel is a moral allegory because their internal conflicts add another level to the story.…
