This is a critical view on a short story called “Little Things” by the famous short stories writer Raymond Carver. This short story was written in 1989, in New York. Carver even published a book called “Where I’m Calling From”. Where he published many of his popular Fiction short stories, most of them are just to entertain his audience including this one we are talking about “Little Things”. The book shows Raymond’s life work going from one theme to other with no problem at all. I really think everyone should take a moment and read this short story at least once in a lifetime just like all other short stories Carver wrote. He was the first writer who started writing cold and cruel stories, which made him very unique. Little Things is about an argument between a couple who have a baby which the mom is carrying. The father comes in to the story running, he is very aggressive and rude, he does even think the poor baby. The parents keep fighting and yelling, while the father is putting all his things in a suitcase, he is ready to leave. Carver also mentions how everything is very dark not only outside but in the inside of the house too, we can picture that the story is taking place late at night in their home. His poems can be very challenging also so you have to get used to his way of describing things and to the plain texts he writes with no many details or not being very specific in things. Even sometimes he writes really long stories about something extremely simple and when it is something that can have a lot of detail and plenty ways the story can go, he doesn’t use it and just makes it particularly

The short story “Cathedral” by Raymond Carver is told from the point-of-view of the narrator. Speaking in first person, the narrator describes a particular night in which he meets Robert, a blind friend of the narrator’s wife. Because the story is written in the first person, the reader is able to see what the narrator is thinking as well as speaking. Furthermore, because of the point-of-view and the brutal honesty of the narrator, the reader is given a chance to connect with the narrator and follow him through his personal transformation from the beginning of the story until the end.…

In class we read three books of poems that couldn 't be more different. They each have different styles of poetry and I got different imagery from each one. The first one by Donald Hall I thought was the easiest to read. It was like a book of short stories about his wife who eventually dies. Reading the poems in the book you can feel his emotions through his words and the imagery was like I was there suffering with him.…

I had to read a few of them a couple times to see what the author was trying to get across, but the way they wrote it was beautiful and empowering. The difference in my experience of reading poetry compared to before this class is being able to understand it. I am now able to read it and just see more than words on a piece of paper, I now see someone’s heart and soul, their feelings, their life. The statements that Billy Collins makes about poetry and literature are that people want instant gratification and do not want to put the effort into trying to understand the work in front of…

Critical Reading: “The Blind Man” We live in a society where people are solely judged by their appearance. We allow the media and the internet to develop our opinions. Most of us no longer take the time to get to know each other and it's rather unfortunate. The short story “Cathedral” by Raymond Carver is very relatable and is a great example because it deals with the idea of looking versus actually seeing. One might think that those two words are interchangeable but Carver shows that seeing has a deeper meaning.…
