After reading the novel Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell, I have indicated that I relate mostly to one of the main characters, Eleanor. We have a relation due to her not so great home situation, her surprising love life, and the fact that she is still functioning. Eleanor hasn't been satisfied with her home life nor have I. We both struggle with men mistreating our family, meaning late in the night waking up to fights and hearing our mothers cry. Both having to make sure that our siblings are okay before seeing if we are. With all of her little siblings sharing a room with her she often had to climb down from her bunk bed and gather them all in her arms.…

A journey is defined as a path an individual makes either from one place to another. It can vary from a hiking trip, to the Appalachian Mountains to a child growing up from an abusive home and going to college. Journeys both embark a change typically physically and mentally to an individual. The former Vietnam veteran Jimmy Cross in The Things They Carried and the Doctor in The Use of Force both portrayed a weak sense of responsibility in the short term, but their intentions and growth in the long run were for the greater good. Jimmy Cross was just a early twenties solider that was drafted into the Vietnam war to fight for his country.…

Although the connection between a swamp and life may not seem relevant, Mary Oliver creates a scene of a treacherous swamp alluding to the hardships in life. In Crossing the Swamp, Oliver uses structure, tone, and imagery to describe the crossing of a swamp and its parallelism to the life's struggles. The Oliver's structure guides the readers through the swamp cautious as if the swamp really is dangerous. The swamp is described as "endless" in the beginning. This is obviously meant in a negative connotation.…

Every Veteran’s Day, America celebrates the past and present citizens who have served this country; however, many do not truly understand or appreciate the sacrifice these soldiers made. In the chapter “Speaking of Courage” Time O’Brien describes Norman Bowker’s struggle to adjust to civilian life, and his guilt that he carried after witnessing his fellow soldier, Kiowa, die. The chapter is centered around the image of Bowker driving his father’s truck around a lake on the Fourth of July. O’Brien provides his commentary on the war, conveying the damaging affect serving one’s country can have on life after battle. The chapter also focuses on the ignorance and selfishness of humans to not appreciate those coming back from war.…

In the world of writing, there is fiction and nonfiction. As people, though, we hardly ever find it possible to confine ourselves to the typical categories, and are always reaching out. The encounters the Do family and the others on board faced tested their limits and placed them in situations were great perseverance was required. The novel Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell provides a unique perspective on young adult literature due to its subject matter and cross marketing. The premise of Eleanor & Park provides a place the discussion of body image idealization in young adult literature and non-aggressive racism in young adult literature while not overtaking the plot. Eleanor manages to be an unapologetically non-stereotypical heroine and romantic love interest without the standard ugly duckling to swan transformation. The novel rose up the New York Times Bestsellers list due to the cross marketing done by the publisher. While a young adult book, Eleanor & Park drew in an adult audience.…

We have examined many wonderful stories throughout the course of this year, but my favorite from this year was Once More to the Lake by E.B. White. Magnificently, it encompasses the story of a father sharing one of his greatest childhood memories with his son. As a boy, the father had ventured with his family to the state of Maine, where they spent the month of August living next to a lake. Although there were a couple incidents on his original trip, the father had always been drawn to the peacefulness of the lake and the fantastic memories which were linked to the place. However, the story focused more exclusively on the realization of the father, where he pictured himself as his father and his son as him.…

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal,” This statement is taken directly from The Declaration of Independence, and has come to be one of the most recognizable American quotes. But, who is “all men”? Written in 1776, the Declaration may have defined men as ‘white males of age to vote’, insinuating of only those specified are equal. The very first draft of this historical document actually stated, “All free men are created equal”, so who’s to say that if they initially stripped slaves of their freedom, they wouldn’t intentionally do the same to females?…
