Therese says she has to spend so much of her time looking after her mother-in-law that she must “watch her like a hawk!” By saying this Therese shows she is justifying her terrible life by saying that she must spend so much of her time watching her mother-in-law that she has no time for anything else. She also claims to be “stuck” with her mother-in-law, yet another load of blame shifted to her mother-in-law. When talking about her mother-in-law with the other women Therese says:
