The lyrics detail the struggle with wondering what goes on inside your spouse’s head and determining if they might be seeing someone else behind your back. Lyrics like “I hear all the secrets that you keep,” shows that the wife knows that her husband is cheating but it’s not so obvious to the husband that she figured it out. One of the biggest elements of Lemonade was the subtle lyrics hinting at the issues within Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s marriage. I attempted to capture this major element in my lyrics to show the struggle that a woman faces knowing that her husband is cheating on her. There are different moments in my lyrics where she is doubting herself but then gains the confidence to stand up for herself. The lyrics “My worries kill me on demand,” describe the ongoing battles of paranoia between the person amid police violence or the woman with marriage issues. The person in the first verse is worried if the killings will continue to haunt him and his loved ones which might led to future turmoil later in life. The wife in the second verse is concerned with what her husband is doing behind her back. The repeated lines of “Will you understand?” sums up the mindset each person is coming from once faced with their battle they are facing. My main goal with this chorus was to tie all the messages together to make the song appeal to both sides of the issue. Beyoncé always seemed to display a bit of doubtfulness when speaking on the future of her family, so I had to make sure that I captured that element. The themes of brokenness and emptiness that Beyoncé faced in Lemonade were the elements that I captured in my lyrics for the derivative project. The way she presented her raw emotions really caught my attention which led to me ultimately being inspired to create a song based around these ideas. The themes of religion, race, gender, and heritage were what truly pushed me to get out of my comfort zone with the creation of the lyrics. Beyoncé made a major artistic statement with Lemonade that will inspire an entire generation to
