Leadership Challenge: Can You Conquer It?
1. As an NCO, what specifically will you do to influence your peers and junior Marines to reverse this trend?
Personally, I will focus on a couple of my main leadership principals, “set the example” and “know yourself and seek self-improvement”. The reasons behind why I like those specific leadership principals is because in my opinion the need to set the example first before we expect anything from the other Marines, and if we are not setting the example for whatever reason, we need to be able identify the problem, find a solution and ask for help if needed, like in any other mission. We are always expected to set the standards and set the example for other Marines, other

I made a mistake and I had to ask for help because I was not able to deal with it by myself. On July 26th, 2016, I went through a dramatic experience; I lost my best friend on a motorcycle accident. We went for a ride on our motorcycles, and my best friend got hit and ran over by a truck, he died on the spot. After that day, my life changed completely, I had lots of issues trying to get my life together and I would be able to accomplish any of them if it wasn’t because I asked for help. Few weeks later, on the night of 12 September, 2015, I was arrested for suspicious of a DUI (driving under the influence), and convicted with wet and reckless charges. My lack of sleep plus few beers made me blackout and unconsciously got behind the wheel and proceed to drive home, obviously I didn’t make it all the …show more content…
The Marine should be able to come to me looking for advice of any kind and not just work related issues. That includes personal issues, legal issues, promotions, military benefits, etc. If I’m able to help Marines with work related issues while on duty and non-work related issues while off-duty will reduce stress on them. Examples of these personal issues are family problems and legal problems. Even if I don’t have the answer, I would be able to find the answer for

Completing assigned tasks and set goals is always the priority to the overall success of a platoons intended mission as well as increasing longevity of the life and health of all soldiers in the squadron. “To accomplish given task, an organizations’ leader and or leaders must efficiently and effectively carry out the primary management functions of decision making, supervising, and making the most of an organization manpower and allocated resources (Mintzberg, 1979). “In doing so leaders can adopt and adjust specific styles of leadership to assist in mission completion. This book report will compare and contrast the leadership styles and characteristics of SFC Rob Gallagher and SFC Jeff Fenlason from authors Jim Fredericks’ “Black Hearts: One Platoon’s Descent into Madness in Iraq’s Triangle of Death”, explaining how their similar but different styles of leadership helped and or hindered their units’ mission failures and success.…

Grand Old Woman of the Marine Corps “One, two, three, chug!” the drill instructors howled at the group of female, Marine Corps recruits lined up on the quarter deck. Throughout history there have been countless examples of leader’s effective implementation of the mission command principles. Colonel Puller, an example of one such leader, was the Commander for the 1st Marine Regiment during the invasion and battle of Peleliu. Throughout the 7 days of fighting, he successfully demonstrated the principles of mission command through his use of: building cohesive teams through mutual trust, providing a clear commander’s intent, exercising disciplined initiative, and accepting prudent risk. Even though sustaining over 50 percent casualties in his regiment and having to withdraw from Peleliu he was successful in implementing the principles of mission command.…

U.S. Marine socializes recruits through boot camp where Marines learn leadership and command process. They are socialized to acknowledge higher rank and the proper authority that helps in the military mission. During boot camp, they discover the purpose of a well-coordinated team, group loyalty, and interdependence. Socialization discourages individual effort, pride, and inculcates the values and the right attitudes to work with others in order to succeed and for survival in the mission. Yet, an overemphasis on competence in our daily and annual training and a lack of a robust character development has led to what I frame is a 'crisis of character' in our force today. The development of the character of our force is a daily endeavor and cannot live solely in classroom periods of instruction less we continue to fail in our responsibility to foster our profession and return quality citizens to society after their service. The Marine Corps is an awesome warfighting organization with a storied heritage, tradition and legacy as America’s expeditionary force, yet those familiar with its history, or for that matter…

At some point, every leader probably thinks about how they want to lead and what is important to him or her as a leader. During the CSC coursework, I wrote my command philosophy, which gave me an opportunity to reflect on past leaders I had encountered, and project how I wanted to lead in the future. The command philosophy was a statement, written to the members of the unit, about what I valued as a leader. As a foundation for how to approach this philosophy, the CSC coursework described USMC General Lejeune’s teacher/scholar leadership approach (USMC CDET, 2013a). This approach to leadership rests on a foundation of ethics, directly supporting an ethos of core values, mode of conduct, leadership principles, and leadership traits (USMC…

I choose to take a different outlook, I believe that true leadership is taking what the military gives you and making better people out of them. Resulting in better sailors and finally, the outcome is an elite fighting force that works as a team and can accomplish any task, including the ones that they themselves do not believe they can do. CMDCM Ronald Clark one of my mentors instilled this philosophy…

When humanity thinks of the Marine Corps they think of an establishment that prides themselves off of the flashy terms honor, courage, and commitment. This paper argues that there is a noticeable split occurring in the Marine Corps, for the reason that the Marines Corps have noticed an increasing amount of distrust, due to the increased use of technology, resulting in a lack of human interaction. After closely reviewing Simon Sinek video: “First why and then trust” it became clear and concise that they were a noticeable split taking place in the Marine Corps. This can be seen in the three supporting points: distrust, more technology, and human interaction.…

Army relies heavily on group efforts. Like James Sinegal’s model of mutual trust, the military desires its leaders to create a positive environment for the organization to prosper. First and foremost, effective leadership begins with strong character. The U.S. Department of the Army has set several universal standards, such as the Army Values and Warrior Ethos, to establish ethical guidelines throughout the organization (3-1, 3-4). Within these guidelines, empathy is weighted among the most important characteristics to have.…
