1. In Langston Hughes’, Radioactive Red Caps, we are given very little about our narrator. But what we are given is the basic facts that the narrator is black and slightly intelligent. We know that he is intelligent by the way he phrases his sentences. In the opening line he says, “that Negroes today are being rapidly integrated into every phase of American life from the Army and Navy to schools to industries—advancing, advancing!” (210) The narrator also thinks himself above others due to his intelligence by referring to the man he is speaking with as Simple. The word simple is commonly used to express something is very easy to do but it terms it means someone of simple mind, someone who is not very bright. Hughes’ narrator thinks himself above others.
In John Updike’s, A&P, our narrator is named Sammy. The basic information we are given about Sammy is that he works in an A&P, he is nineteen, lives somewhere near Salem, and he is not very happy about himself. He looks down on himself during his narration.

I believe the narrator in Radioactive Red Caps is unreliable. I believe this because he gives us only his opinion that everything is changing. But in terms of anyone else’s opinion he frowns at them and acts as though the person who is giving the opinion is wrong. When Simple says that the bomb shelters won’t be for everyone, the narrator responds with, “”Absurd!” I said. “Bomb shelters will be for everyone””(211). This response says that the narrator believe that everything he says is the only truth that should be believed. This makes the narrator unreliable because he only believes himself and no one else. He tells us the opinion of Simple but in response shuts them down rather then considering them.
