This scene is shown twice in the music video. One of them shows the boy dancing in front of a line of police officers with various weapons aimed at him. This serves as a nod to the "Black Lives Matter" movement. The boy standing in front of the line of police officers shows the helplessness and smallness some feel in the face of police officers who may not have the best intentions in mind. The second part of the scene shows the young boy stretching out his arms to his sides, surrendering. The line of police officers then put up their hands in the "Hands Up, Don 't Shoot" pose, also showing them surrendering. This scene is powerful as well, as it shows the future. If both police officers and minorities surrender and agree to speak about their differences and compromise, then peace will be closer to obtain. Beyoncé’s use of this scene shows the audience that she still stays with her culture and its issues and does not brush it away like others in her same situation. In the “Formation” music video, Beyoncé asserts herself, especially when talking about her marriage with rapper and music mogul, Jay-Z. At the time 2:58 in the video, Beyoncé states that “when he fucks me good, I take his ass to Red Lobster…if he hit it right, I might take him on a flight on my chopper, drop him off at the mall, let him buy some J 's, let him shop up, ‘cause I slay” (Beyoncé). This lyric helps to assert the artist’s dominance over her husband. With the lyric, she is stating that holds the power in the relationship, which is contrary to societal norms. In patriarchal society, it is expected for men to be in be charge in the relationship. This lyric caused such a controversy, since it was exactly opposite from what her audience expected. Beyoncé demanding power and forcing her husband into a place
