Kneeling For Love Or Hate The rising trend of professional players kneeling during the national anthem during sport events is becoming a prominent discussion in the United States. This in response produces many different reactions and conversations expressed over a number of different genres. The significance of this is that the contrasting genres focus on the differing rhetorical appeals. For instance, “NBA Players Join Anti-Racist Anthem Protests" by Green Left Weekly is categorized as an academic journal and it appeals to the rhetoric of factual evidence. In the days that followed the president issued a series of tweets reiterating his views and calling for a fan boycott of games” (The Associated Press). Donald Trump using his platform as president in this matter is inevitably creating this conception of “A Nation Divided”. This statement is forcing society to take either the side of President Donald Trump’s dislike of the protest or the side of “Sports United”. This symbolically gestures that due to Donald Trump’s superior influential platform that his declarations and positions take precedence over that of professional athletes. Although, The Associated Press presents the audience with these two colliding views they still make it evident that you should be educated on each side of the spectrum, “racial injustice and police mistreatment of African-Americans has become obscured by the narrower issue of how to act during the anthem. ‘I think we should just have separate and distinct conversations. Because when you merge it into the flag and the anthem, it's lost” (The Associated Press). Using a platform to bring attention to the problem of racial discrimination and division in the US broadens the scope of the players and important figures influential reach by adding the accumulation of different sports.
