I believe that the theme of the “Mockingbird” written in 2010 by Kathryn Erskine is about how a young girl with Asperger’s and her father deals with the death of her brother, and continue living their life.
Plot summary: Caitlyn is a young fifth-grade girl with Asperger’s syndrome. Asperger’s makes her anti-social, however, she loves to read and she reads very well. She loves to read the dictionary. On the other hand, she understands the world in simple ways. Her brother would always explain things so she could better understand them. He also helped her control her behavior and encourages her to draw every day so to Caitlyn, her brother was a great part of her life. Now that he has died, her life is now falling apart.
Caitlyn loved to hide in her brother’s room. They had special days when they would have pizza for dinner and watch tv. His room was a safe place for Caitlyn. Now her brother’s room door was kept closed and she was not allowed to go inside. She had family members and teachers asking her how she is doing and is constantly wanting her to tell them how she feels. Caitlyn does not like this. Her brother died and nothing makes sense to her. With each day, she is learning that life is complicated. “You don’t shoot the mockingbird,” she said, “It is like shooting a person though,” Caitlin says that the project her brother made feels like a Mockingbird then she got mad and says that she hates mockingbirds she does not like them. She looks up the word closure and finds that it means the death of a loved one. She did not feel good. In the end, with the help of Mrs. Brook, Caitlyn was able to get in touch with her emotions, understand death and find closure.
